The Credits Scene In "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" Perfectly Sets Up A Sequel

    Okay, by now you've watched To All The Boys I've Loved Before on Netflix.

    You know Peter and Lara Jean (aka Covinsky) are the OTP to end all OTPs.

    I'm not being dramatic, it's just the truth.

    But let's talk about that mid-credits scene, and specifically the appearance of this Certified Dreamboat™.

    If you've read Jenny Han's book series that To All The Boys I've Loved Before is based on, you know aaaall about this beautiful boy and the place he holds in Lara Jean's life. But if you haven't read the books (and you really should!), let me give you a quick rundown on why this scene is so exciting.

    First, let's take stock of the status of Lara Jean's crushes at the end of the movie: there's Kenny from camp, whose letter was returned to Lara Jean unread because he'd changed addresses since she knew him.

    It's pretty safe to say this guy is out of the picture.

    Then there's Lucas from Homecoming, who Lara Jean learns is gay, and who goes on to become a pretty good friend of hers.

    We can't forget Josh, the boy next door (and Margot's ex). Although Lara Jean begins the movie fantasising about him, by the end it's pretty clear she feels nothing more than friendship for him (and vice versa).

    And, of course, there's Peter with the beautiful eyes.

    We all know how that ends up (PERFECT!!!). 😍

    Which just leaves John Ambrose from Model UN unaccounted for.

    Until that mid-credits scene, of course.

    He shows up, glo'd up, with Lara Jean's letter and a bunch of flowers in hand.

    The scene is pretty funny, with Kitty calling out "Lara Jean, it's for yooo-oou", but it also sets up a potential sequel PERFECTLY. John Ambrose, you see, is a pretty major character in P.S. I Still Love You, the second book in the series.

    How he comes into the story plays out slightly different in book one. Unlike in the movie, John Ambrose was actually friends with both Peter K and Lara Jean when they were in middle school, but he moved away and they all lost touch.

    While Lara Jean is fake-dating Peter, she goes to a Model UN session that John Ambrose is at because she's so curious about him (and whether he got her letter). She walks up to him, but is too embarrassed to say anything and runs away.

    In the second book, we learn that John Ambrose actually recognised Lara Jean, and it causes him to write to her. The two of them become penpals.

    I won't say any more, because I don't want to spoil it. But it seems like even with the changes that have already happened in the movie version (ie Peter and John Ambrose don't know each other, and John Ambrose shows up on Lara Jean's doorstep rather than writing to her), it's likely that the broad strokes of the story – and John Ambrose's part in it – will remain the same if a sequel happens.

    If you're panicking right about now about a guy who isn't Peter K showing up to jeopardise your OTP – without spoiling anything, I want to let you know that John Ambrose is also an amazing boy who will totally get under your skin.

    I know, I KNOW, he's not Peter K – and I'll admit, when I first heard the plot of the second book (and the inclusion of John Ambrose), I was reaaaally wary. Because I didn't want a love triangle, I just wanted more Peter K!!!

    But boy, does Jenny Han know how to create dreamy guys. And while there's plenty of great Peter moments in book two, I actually really enjoyed getting to know John Ambrose. He's so soft™ and swoon-worthy.

    Don't just take my word for it – other book readers were also VERY excited about the hint of John Ambrose we got in the mid-credits scene...
