The Next Season Of "Game Of Thrones" Will Be Shorter AND Delayed

Posted on

But this year, it will be even harder: Not only will Season 7 feature just seven episodes instead of the usual 10, it will also be released at least a couple of months later than usual.

That's because, after six seasons of ~coming~, winter is finally HERE. Which means filming has been pushed back so the production can get some gloomier weather than usual.

Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming, said in a press release: “Now that winter has arrived on Game of Thrones, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual, when the weather is changing. Instead of the show’s traditional spring debut, we’re moving the debut to summer to accommodate the shooting schedule.” Fittingly, for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, the show will appear in winter.

Needless to say, fans aren't exactly taking the news well...

when you hear Game Of Thrones season 7 only 7 episode and we have to wait till summer #GameOfThrones

There will be only 7 episodes in Season 7 of Game of Thrones.

NO! #GameofThrones you better be playin! How are we supposed to WAIT longer for ONLY 7 more episodes! I'M YELLING!

The fandom after learning that we have to wait until next summer for #GameofThrones. @WiCnet @GameOfOwns

On the plus side, less – I mean fewer – episodes means more time and budget spent on each individual episode. So hopefully we'll get an even bigger and better season than ever before in terms of quality, if not length.

Stannis when he found out #GameofThrones Season 7 would have less episodes than usual. (

It also gives a bit more time for George R. R. Martin/the books to catch up to the show again.

Although the fan theory that GRRM will release the final two books in the series at once is unlikely, there's a better chance at least that the next book, The Winds of Winter, will come out before Season 7. While Season 6 of the show possibly spoiled some events from the novel, there's no doubt plenty more that is yet to be revealed, and even what we have seen will probably play out differently in the books.
