18 Things About "The Baby-Sitters Club" I Really Don't Understand

I still think about the BSC a lot.

1. Why did the parents of Stoneybrook think it was okay to entrust their children to…actual children?

Weren’t there any adults around to do the babysitting?

2. How did these tweens even know so much about looking after kids and being responsible, anyway?

I could quite literally not even look after myself at that age.

3. And why weren’t they more grossed out about changing diapers?

Full offense to babies, but as an adult I'm still grossed out by it.

4. Considering that Richard was so strict, how was Mary Anne allowed to have such a serious boyfriend at 13?

Sidenote: In hindsight, Logan was kind of the worst.

5. Why did they try to make Bart happen?

Scholastic

Kristy was NOT into it.

6. Actually, why were they ALL dating so much at 11–13?

And why did the boys on the book covers often look 40?

7. How far away was Watson’s house from Claudia’s?

Charlie acted like it was such a hassle to drop Kristy off for BSC meetings, and he even charged the club gas money?!

8. How much money was the BSC actually making?

It must have been a lot for Claudia to fully fund their snacks AND her own art supplies and extensive closet.

9. Why did the BSC members make fun of Mary Anne for crying all the time, when they totally sulked and cried constantly themselves?

So much drama for one little club.

10. And why does everyone describe Dawn as laid-back, when she’s actually pretty judgy and uptight?

She was an anti-sugar wellness warrior before it was cool.

11. Um...did anyone actually like Mallory?

Theory: We all hated her because deep down, we feared we actually were her.

12. And did anyone care at all about Abby?

She was no Dawn.

13. Honestly, how did every adult in Stoneybrook not find the entire Baby-Sitters Club absolutely insufferable?

They were in EVERYONE'S business and thought they knew better than every adult.

14. How many times did these girls actually repeat the eighth grade?

So many summer vacations without ever leaving middle school.

15. Why were there so many mysteries in Stoneybrook?

Was it on the Hellmouth? Or the Upside Down?

16. By the way, why is there a hyphen in "Baby-Sitters Club"?

It's so unnecessary.

17. How many books did Ann M. Martin actually write herself — and which ones?

Will never forget the moment I found out there were ghostwriters involved.
