1. Ticket to Ride

This is the game I'm DYING to play, but haven't yet. It sounds a lot like Settlers of Catan, but you're trying to be a railroad Baron. Let's be honest, pretty much any game where you get to call yourself a Baron is a win.

This game is perfect for anyone that loves Settlers.

2. Hollywood Blockbuster

You build a slate of ridiculous movies starring actors with punny names, and then compete against the other studio-head players for awards.

I haven't played many games that have an auction-mechanic like this before, but found it genuine enjoyable. This game falls right in the sweet spot (45 to 75 minutes to play), and was genuinely funny.

3. Blockus

It's sort of like battle-Tetris. I absolutely LOVE this game. It's competitive, strategic, and has bright colors for my ADHD! Perfect for four players, I actually really enjoy the three player mode where you alternate taking turns for the fourth person.

Fair warning: If you get too good at this game, your loved-ones might stop speaking to you entirely.

4. Carcassonne

Basically, two to five players are competing against each other to claim cities, cloisters, and roads on an ever-expanding map. It's pretty much feudalism the board game!

I've only had the chance to play Carcassonne once so far , but it left me longing for more. It's the classic board game where someone beats the crap out of you the first time you play it and then you either swear off it forever or want to play again immediately. Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment though.

5. Stratego

It seems like everyone knows about this game, but has never actually played it. It's chess with hidden information. I'm always partial to any of the themed versions, because nothing heightens the stakes quite like putting the fate of all Middle-Earth at stake.

I've yet to play any of the four-player versions, but I can only imagine that makes things even crazier. This is potentially my favorite two-player game ever.

6. Axis & Allies

This game feels like Risk on steroids. Players break into teams of three (the allies) and two (the Germans and Japanese) in an epic battle for world domination.

It's a blast to play the first couple of times since there are so many different ways for the game to unfold, but more experienced players definitely have an advantage in Axis & Allies. Also, it takes awhile to set up, which is always a drawback when you're trying to teach someone to play a game for the first time.

7. Shadows Over Camelot

A game that let's you be a knight in the court of King Arthur AND potentially a traitorous spy? What's not to love? Three to seven players combine forces to fight evil, but there could be a spy amongst them. I love the fact that the traitor is randomly determined and may or may not even be in the game. Yay, hidden information!

This game was seriously a blast. Turns can be a little complicated initially, but once you get the hang of things the game moves at a nice pace. I wish it was a little easier for the traitor to sabotage things without revealing her/his identity, but I've never been one for subtlety myself.

8. Labyrinth

No, it's unfortunately not based on the David Bowie movie. Nothing says you can't pretend it is though! Labyrnith is a delightfully-simple maze game where you're working with and against three other players to try to reach three specific tiles before the others can reach their own destinations.

This game is much more family-friendly and accessible. It's great to play with younger siblings or new gamers!

9. Backgammon

Not, not just a game to be enjoyed by 70-year-old men in the park on Tuesday afternoons. Backgammon's actually a fantastic game for two players. Plus, it comes in a handy carrying-case!

A blast from the past. Apparently, I'm destined to be that old guy in the park.

10. Avalon

From the same team that brought you The Resistance, Avalon takes things to a whole new level by adding in the Merlin role. Merlin knows who the spies are, but can only speak in riddles and will lose the game for the good guys if s/he's outed.

You know I love me some Arthurian board games, and anything involving spies. This one gets two thumbs up in my book!

11. Puerto Rico

Colonialism is fun! Also, horribly oppressive to most of the people involved, but Puerto Rico takes that element out! This game reminds me a lot of a game we played in sixth grade history where the class pretended to be the settlers at Plymouth Rock and had to try to build a colony.

I've yet to play this game, but it sounds like it'll be a smash hit to me!
