_Persepolis_ by Marjane Satrapi

You've probably read _The Handmaid's Tale_, or at the very least know the plot, so it’s time to move on to another Margaret Atwood book classic. There’s no easy way to summarize the plot: _The Blind Assassin_ is a story told in layers, featuring several intertwining plots. If you needed convincing though, Time magazine named it as one of the 100 greatest English-language novels since 1923.

Most people only know of J. D. Salinger from _The Catcher in the Rye_, which is a shame because some of his other works are worthy of just as much praise and attention. _Franny and Zooey_ comprises two of the author's short stories and briefly follows the eponymous Franny and Zooey, members of the intellectual Glass family.

The story follows two friends, an unnamed narrator and the prodigiously talented Tracey. _Swingtime_ tackles themes of race, class, and friendship with Zadie Smith’s usual confidence and humor.

If you've never read any work by Murakami before, _After Dark_ is a great diving off point. Taking place over the course of a night, the story mostly follows Mari, whose sister has been trapped in a deep, heavy sleep that’s lasted more than two months. If that synopsis didn't weird you out, you should definitely give the book a chance.

The debut novel from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, author of _Americanah_ and _Half of a Yellow Sun_. In the midst of a military coup, fifteen-year-old Kambili is sent to live with her aunt. In her new house she learns of a deep family secret.
