I think almostdaft is right as far as “value” goes. From an evolutionary standpoint, women are more “valuable,” considering that one man and two women (with the ability to bear children) are going to propagate the species more efficiently than the reverse…
@hdeepea: my thoughts exactly. I thought it was interesting that none of the “support” made the article’s cut. She’s in the entertainment business, good for her. What she does is no more or less silly than anyone else’s work in that industry. I’m certain that, for instance, if a guy had been attacked for performing an Obama impersonation on SNL then the reaction here would be markedly different.

The point is really that quotation marks aren’t meant to be used for emphasis, as is being done above. Scare quotes, however, are used to show irony/sarcasm, same as when someone uses “air quotes” in speech. When quotes are used for emphasis, it looks like scare quotes are being used.
