Tom Cruise Revealed That He Was Actually Handcuffed During A Car Chase Stunt In "Mission Impossible 7" And I Am Seriously Blown Away

The actor always goes the extra mile when performing his own stunts.

Tom Cruise has always been a committed actor, going so far as to perform his own dangerous stunts in action blockbusters like the Mission Impossible franchise and Top Gun: Maverick.

Tom hasn't let his age stop him either, with the actor doing a number of jaw-dropping, intense and highly physical maneuvers in the latest Mission Impossible flick — Dead Reckoning: Part One.

As seen in the trailer, one of the edge-of-your-seat stunts is a car chase featuring Tom's character, Ethan Hunt, and Hayley Atwell as Grace, a burglar and Ethan's new ally in the film.

During this scene, Ethan and Hayley are handcuffed together and have to navigate the busy streets of Rome as they attempt to escape from several pursuers (one of which is Pom Klementieff who plays a French assassin).

Their only getaway option is via car — which results in a mindblowing sequence of Ethan driving one-handed while dodging their enemies.

Now, surely, I thought that there was some movie magic involved in editing this scene to make it seem like Tom and Hayley were handcuffed together.

But as it turns out, Tom went the extra mile and was actually handcuffed while filming the car chase scene — which sees him drifting, reversing and performing some epic stuntwork.

In an interview with BuzzFeed Australia, Tom confirmed that it was Hayley's first car chase scene, but he had put in a number of hours of training to ensure that the stunt was pulled off both safely and successfully.

He also said that he loved "the character dynamic" that both he and Hayley created during the chaos of this scene — and as someone that has already seen Dead Recoking: Part One, I can confirm they're both hilarious and fantastic together.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is out in cinemas on July 12, 2023!
