31 Movies You'll Understand A Lot Better Once You Rewatch Them As Adults

1. Coraline

I watched Coraline as a kid and was scared as hell! But as an adult, I'm always blown away by the level of detail and richness in the world. It's now one of my all time favourites.

2. Mulan

As a teenager, I never understood all the hype over Mulan. But then I rewatched it at the age of 20 and was BLOWN AWAY. It's so inspiring to see Mulan take her life into her own hands instead of letting people choose what they think is best for her.

3. The Matrix

The Matrix was always on when I was a kid and I had a general idea of what the movie was about. But it wasn't until I got older and watched it for a class in college that I realised just how deep and philosophical it is. It's one of those movies that you can't really appreciate until you mature more and can fully understand it.

4. The Devil Wears Prada

I feel like coming back to this movie as an adult, you can really understand the depth of Andy's relationships and how she loses them. It's not so easy to sympathise with Nate and her friends when you see how jerky they were being, but Andy wasn't completely innocent either.

5. Bee Movie

As a kid, I found the movie very dull. But I recently rewatched it as an adult and I have never laughed more at an animated film. I guess the jokes and humour were more adult-orientated. Not in an innuendo way, mind you, but more like work-related, court-related, relationship-related – jokes that kids wouldn't understand.

6. Clerks

I remember watching Clerks when I was about 13 years old. At the time I thought it was really boring because it was just a whole lot of dialogue that I didn't understand. But as an adult who has worked extensively in retail and customer service, I relate to it on so many levels!

When I watched Mary Poppins as a kid, I mainly focused on the animation parts rather than the story arc of Mr Banks and the relationship with his kids. It took rewatching it as an adult to fully understand it all. And let's not talk about how "Feed The Birds" destroys me now.

Seven-year-old me did not appreciate the genius that is "Hellfire". I thought it was just another bad guy song talking about how he was going to be evil, but now I know it's about a man that feels torn between his lust for a woman and his corrupted views on what is right.

9. Gone with the Wind

Definitely Gone with the Wind. I initially didn't understand why it was so long and, well, winded, but as an adult it's heartbreaking and totally worth the watch.

10. Star Wars

As a kid, I labelled it as boring and geeky. It wasn't for me. But then my best friend asked me to watch the series with her, so I gave it a shot and now I'm TOTALLY in love with the movies.

11. Dirty Dancing

It was one of my favourites when I was little because of the music and dancing. It wasn't until I was older that I realised how much I missed. I didn't understand why Penny was sick in bed or why Johnny was "blamed" for it, or why Baby's dad hated Johnny and took his check back from Robbie. It was just *whooosh* right over my head.

I first watched Up when I was in first grade and thought it was okay. But once I got older and watched it again, I truly understood the messages the movie was trying to impart. I also picked up on more of the humour and overall found the story more emotional.

So many of the quips and one lines from Clueless went right over my head as a kid. Now that I get what they're talking about I think it's even funnier.

14. A Little Princess

I loved A Little Princess as a child. But it took rewatching it as a 20-year-old to understand the true beauty of it. The characters express so much forgiveness and kindness without expecting anything in return. I especially appreciated the bonds of friendship between the girls that branch age, economic status and race.

My mum and I used to watch The Others together. I understood the major plot twist at the end of the film but pretty much every other detail (i.e. the whole thing with the husband and the locked doors) went way over my head. I recently rewatched it and everything makes so much more sense now.

16. 500 Days of Summer

I remember watching 500 Days of Summer as a teenager. By the end of the movie I was convinced that Summer was the WORST character. But rewatching it as an adult has made me realise that Tom wasn't exactly the best person either. He was kind of selfish and refused to accept the reality of his relationship with Summer, which was ultimately his downfall. Still love the movie though.

17. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

I practically wore the VHS out watching this as a kid but I basically forgot about it until someone suggested watching it at a college party. I remember calling my mother and asking why she would ever let a 6-year-old watch that movie as much as I did! She said, "As long as you were only laughing at the kid level jokes, it was fine."

18. Whale Rider

My grandpa took me to see Whale Rider and I remember being super pouty about the whole outing. The cultural differences kind of went over my head and I was childishly hoping for more whales. Fast forward 15 years later and I now use this film as part of a coming of age unit with my 9th grade English class. I tell them to take the film more seriously than I did when I was younger.

"It was the first PG-13 movie I was allowed to watch when I was a kid but there were SO MANY THINGS I DIDN'T GET. Like when Mrs Doubtfire tells Stu, "she's got a power tool in the bedroom," I thought she was warning him that she kept like a jackhammer or a chainsaw around.

At the time, I didn't like the costumes and wigs. It completely took me out of the movie. But when I watched as an adult, I was blown away by the story, the dialogue and all the details. It's now my favourite movie.

22. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

My lack of attention combined with my young age meant that I really didn't understand this movie when I was younger. It took me rewatching it as an adult to really appreciate how brilliantly off-beat, quirky, dark and clever the film is.

My mum used to watch Hair all the time when I was a kid. I even knew all the music off by heart! Then recently I watched it for the first time in around 15 years and it shook me when I realised what the movie was about and how wonderfully it captured the time period.

24. The Truman Show

I first watched The Truman Show when I was maybe 15 and didn't really grasp the themes or what the film was really about. When I watched it again a few months ago, my mind was blown by all the small details I never noticed. The movie raises a lot of ethical and existential questions that completely went over my head.

25. Matilda

I watched Matilda for the first time as an adult the other day. I hadn't seen it since I was about nine and I finally realised just how horrible Matilda's family were. When I was a kid, I never paid attention or understood because I was so excited that Matilda had magical powers. Also the fact that Mrs Trunchbull killed Miss Honey's dad flew way above my head.

This movie was entertaining as a kid, but as an adult I see the deeper messages and sympathise with Goofy for just wanting to spend time with his teenage son.

I grew up watching the movie Chicago. I loved the singing and dancing, but now that I’m older I can understand all the innuendos and the dark plot.

I saw about 30 minutes of it when I was 10 or 11 and found it ridiculously boring. I watched it again a few months ago at 35 and finally get why it's good.

30. Moulin Rouge

I was in middle school when Moulin Rouge premiered. I knew Satine was a prostitute but the sexual references went over my head because I was obsessed with the music. Now I really appreciate the depth of the plot and character development.

I watched Pride and Prejudice when I was 11 years old and liked it, but had no idea why. Then I watched it when I was older and realised it's one of the best love stories ever.
