Just 23 Movies And TV Shows We Need To See As Broadway Musicals
Give the people what they want!!
We recently asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us what shows and movies are just begging to be adapted into Broadway musicals. Here are some of the strongest!
Note: Submissions have been edited for length and clarity.
1. Hocus Pocus (1993)
"I need to see that 'I Put a Spell on You' performance live."
2. Ratatouille (2007)
"First of all, it’s a perfect movie. My friends and I had an entire discussion on how the Broadway musical could be done. A lot of child actors and puppets are necessary. And a LOT of tap dancing."
3. Glee (2009-2015)
"It’s a musical show already, but with the comedy, drama and campiness of the show, it would make a great Broadway show."
4. Tangled (2010)
"I personally think it would work WONDERS on stage and is, in many people’s opinions, better than Frozen! Plus, more amazing songs would be put into production and the storyline would be incredible for the stage!! There would be so much room for dance breaks and just...I need it! Broadway needs it!!!"
5. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
"Just imagine a Sally or Jack Skellington running amok onstage singing. The entire 'This Is Halloween' scene is what I'd most look forward to."
6. M*A*S*H (1972-1983)
"It’s a bit vintage now, but I’d love to see 'M*A*S*H: The Musical.' There’d be some sort of ‘daily routine’ opening number. The big end of Act One number would be everyone getting ready to bug out. Later on, something heart-rending by Hawkeye. It’d be great."
7. The Great Gatsby (2013)
"The film was already larger than life and I’d love to see how it would look in musical form. Just imagine all the songs and the sets!"
"The book is great and the drama and lavishness are perfect for a musical!! The costumes and the sets would be amazing!!!"
8. Rocketman (2019)
"It wouldn't take much to turn it into a stage show! The soundtrack itself is already like a stage recording, and the costumes would be incredible."
"Rocketman. That movie just screams Broadway, and I’m sure the legend himself would produce."
9. The Walking Dead (2010-present)
"I’d pay to see singing zombies."
10. The Princess Diaries (2001)
"The show would kick off with an empowering 'I Want' song performed by Princess Mia. Other memorable numbers would include Mia's afternoon tea with Queen Clarisse; the iconic makeover (complete with a dazzling eye-popping quick change on stage); and a show-stopping solo for Mia when she wholeheartedly steps into her role as the Princess of Genovia.
The sets would be charming and opulent, the costume design a palette of vibrant color, and the chemistry between the actors playing Princess Mia and Queen Clarisse would be a highlight of the show. The creative team would be bolstered by women and led by a female director and female songwriter who would be able to delve into Mia's story and share a holistic vision of her journey."
11. Moana (2016)
"I’ve always thought Moana would make a beautiful Broadway show. There are so many creative and different ways they could do the ocean, the spirits, and Te Fiti. Plus, you cannot tell me 'How Far I’ll Go' would not be the perfect Act 1 ending belt!"
12. Gossip Girl (2007-2012)
"GOSSIP GIRL! I would love to know what kinda soundtrack they could make out of that TV show! It would be awesome!"
13. Coco (2017)
"I’d love nothing more than to see all that incredible energy and color and Mexican culture on Broadway."
14. The Corpse Bride (2005)
"We already know that beloved Tim Burton films can do well on Broadway. Just imagine the set design! It would be so interesting and quite different than a lot of shows currently out there."
15. Smash (2012-2013)
"It would be so cool if Smash was adapted for Broadway! I loved the show when it aired, and a Broadway show about Broadway shows would be super fun."
"Please adapt 'Bombshell' from Smash into an actual musical! Pasek and Paul have already written all of the music!"
16. Twilight (2008)
"I just think Twilight would be so interesting. Vampire musicals do notoriously badly on Broadway, and I just desperately want a good one!"
17. The Princess Bride (1987)
"The Princess Bride. I’ve been saying this for YEARS! All the characters are just BEGGING to sing and dance as it is."
18. Juno (2007)
"I think the movie Juno would be incredible as a musical. It’s very emotional and relatable at the same time. I think it could also be adapted to the stage well, because it’s emotionally so large that music and a minimal set would only allow for that to come through even more."
19. Office Space (1999)
"Office Space. Wouldn't a showstopper about the 'Jump to Conclusions' mat change your life forever? Other potential hits: 'I'm Not That Michael Bolton,' 'Wecome to Chotchkie's,' and 'Superman III.' Obviously, I think about this way too much!"
20. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018)
"I’d like to see the Mamma Mia sequel (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) made into a Broadway musical. I love the original (stage version and movie), and the sequel is practically made for the stage."
21. Mulan (1998)
"The live-action version of Mulan might not be including the songs from the animated version, but they would be perfect on stage! It also has to have an all-Asian cast."
"I need 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' in live-action!"
22. Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness (2020)

"Y’all will hate me but...TIGER KING: THE MUSICAL!"
23. And finally, The Greatest Showman (2017)
"That movie has some of the best music I’ve seen in a film in a while. There is an opportunity for amazing group numbers as well as powerful solos. The sets would be amazing and the costumes would be equally as good. There is also lots of room for people of all shapes, colors, sizes, and background to be the 'outcasts' of the movie. It would be the best Broadway adaptation ever!"
