Hunger Games Prequel Cast — Who Would You Choose?

The film is set to debut in cinemas on Nov. 17, 2023, which is a pretty fast turnaround for a novel that was released in May 2020 — they know what the people want!

Coriolanus may be the main character, but Sejanus is the true hero, in my eyes. He hates the Capitol and everything they stand for and is a victim of his circumstances: born in District 2, the other Capitol kids don’t rate him, and things get worse when he’s forced to mentor his old classmate. Through it all, Sejanus keeps hold of his strong morals and sees the best in everyone, even Snow.

Sejanus Plinth

Dr Gaul loves orchestrating chaos, violence, and destruction and is pretty damn heartless. She’s the Head Gamemaker, the evil brains behind the mutations, and the one we can thank for making the Hunger Games the spectacle we saw in the trilogy. Dr Gaul is a villain through and through — she’s terrifying, even on paper.

Dr Volumnia Gaul

When we met Tigris in the trilogy, she was a stylist turned shopkeeper who harboured rebels and spied on the Capitol — not a Snow supporter in the slightest. Young Tigris, on the other hand, is Coriolanus’s sweet, protective older cousin. She’s the breadwinner of the Snow family and dedicates herself to making sure Coryo succeeds as a mentor and looks the part. Even though we don’t see it in the prequel, that loyalty isn’t returned later on down the line — imagine being fired by your little cousin because he didn’t think you were pretty enough?! Wild.

Tigris Snow

He’s the accidental inventor of the Hunger Games, and all signs point to him being very aware that he created a monster. He seems to know that the Capitol’s “us and them” mentality is a farce and is trapped in a prison of his own doing, relying on morphling to numb it all. Despite being old pals with his dad, he can’t stand Coriolanus, which makes him marginally likeable.

Dean Casca Highbottom

If someone has “the” in their name, that usually tells you everything you need to know about them. Yep, Tigris and Coryo’s grandmother is an eccentric, arrogant old lady and the cousins’ only living family. In her youth, she lived a lavish life and is full of Capitol pride and superiority, despite losing all the wealth in the war.

The Grandma’am

Lysistrata doesn’t fit the typical Capitol archetype — she’s caring, neat, and a bit of a wallflower. Though she doesn’t broadcast her opinions, she's not happy about being involved in the games and develops a close connection with her doomed District 12 tribute, Jessop.

Lysistrata Vickers

Sejanus’s dad is new money and is quite frankly a sellout. He bought his way out of District 2 and into the Capitol, where he became a major donor to the Academy AND Dr Gaul’s lab. He’s pretty much the opposite of his son, more interested in keeping up appearances and climbing the ladder of prestige than thinking of others.

Strabo Plinth

The Plinth move doesn’t seem to have been a whole family decision, because kind, caring Ma is totally out of place in the opulent Capitol. Ma may be pretty modest, but she has some serious culinary skills, and as her name (or lack thereof) suggests, she’s very motherly.

According to Coriolanus, Clemensia is the prettiest girl in their year. She and Coriolanus are quite close, and though she doesn’t see the tributes as equals, she doesn’t like the idea of betting on them.

Clemensia Dovecote

A District 12 boy, Jessup was already working in the mines before he was reaped for the games and is one of the strongest tributes. He’s a boy of few words, but his loyalty to Lucy and Lysistrata is something to be admired.

Jessup Diggs

Maude is the youngest member of the Covey and the book’s youngest character, but she’s easily one of the bravest. Like the rest of her group, she’s full of musical talent and takes after her cousin in the charm department.

Maude Ivory

Troublemaker Billy had a relationship with Lucy, but he had about as much loyalty as Coriolanus — he betrayed her for the Mayor’s daughter. Billy is dedicated to the rebel cause, and while he may seem like bad news, the fact that Coryo feels threatened by him suggests he’s got something going for himself.

Billy Taupe

Coryo’s ex–nightclub-owning neighbour seems to be one of the Capitol’s most eccentric residents — the musician is a bit of a wheeler-dealer who knows his way around the black market. Lucy and the entire Snow family have Pluribus’s generosity to thank for their survival, but something tells me that an older Coriolanus wouldn’t appreciate his freethinking nature.

The Hunger Games is one of the greatest dystopian franchises, so I think we can all agree that the movie adaptation of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes couldn’t come quick enough.

The prequel takes place during the 10th annual Hunger Games and follows a young Coriolanus Snow long before he began wreaking havoc across Panem. The first teaser was released yesterday, and even though it doesn’t give much away, I’m already so excited!!

If you’ve read the book, you’ve probably already got a clear mental picture of all the characters; I know I do.

Tom Blythe and Rachel Zegler have been announced as Coriolanus Snow and Lucy Gray Baird, and I can't wait to see them bring the two to life!

But whoever’s playing Sejanus, Tigris, and the rest of the characters has yet to be revealed. So it’s time to put your casting director hat on: Who would you choose to be in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes?
