10. Raw (2016) aka Grave

Focus World

This French horror movie centers around a vegan teenager who is studying to be a vet. During her initiation to the university, she is forced to eat some sort of meat. Things start to get out of hand when she starts to develop a craving for human flesh. The premise itself sounds pretty disturbing but words can't really describe how truly sickening this movie is. Trade reviewers were impressed by Ducournau's first foray into feature filmmaking — particularly when it came to the nauseating makeup effects.

9. Hereditary (2018)

Hereditary was labeled as the most horrifying movie of 2018 and for good reason. Ari Aster's supernatural thriller left audiences both confused and absolutely terrified. Toni Collette shines as Annie — a grieving mother and daughter who uncovers disturbing information about her mother's past. The movie doesn't rely heavily on jump scares; instead, it uses a haunting soundtrack and gruesome imagery. While movie goers either hated or loved this movie, critics were deeply impressed with Aster's work. Love it or hate, it's certain that Hereditary is going to haunt you for several nights.

8. Ôdishon (1999) aka Audition

When this 1999 Japanese torture thriller debuted at the Rotterdam Film Festival, it won the director, Takashi Miike, some of the festival's most prestigious prizes and impressed fellow horror auteurs like Eli Roth, John Landis, and Rob Zombie. But for some, the movie's hyper-realistic violence was too difficult to endure, and one woman was even quoted to scream, "You're evil!" at the director during the screening.

7. The Human Centipede (2009)

Anyone who has seen The Human Centipede is no doubt unsurprised that it's on this list. The film itself is popularly known as disturbing and disgusting rather than wholeheartedly scary. The idea itself is so messed up — a German surgeon mutilates a trio of tourists in order to reassemble them into a human centipede created by stitching their mouths to each others' rectums. Though audiences everywhere were grossed out by the film, it managed to become a whole franchise with two sequels. The film was largely inspired by the notoriously diabolical work of Josef Mengele at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II, so be sure you watch with an empty stomach.

6. Climax (2018)

Gaspar Noe is no stranger to disturbing content, so it comes as no surprise that one of his movies is featured on this list. Based on a real events, Climax tells the story of French dancers gathered in a remote, empty school building to rehearse on a wintry night. The all-night celebration morphs into a hallucinatory nightmare when they learn their sangria is laced with LSD. It's a very intense movie with strong language, loud noises, and extremely violent scenes. This film should definitely be shown to kids for drug-prevention purposes.

5. The Conjuring (2013)

The Conjuring franchise is one of the most successful horror movie franchises of the decade, and it surely deserves a place on this list. The Conjuring films are all based on the real cases in the career of paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren. If that wasn't scary enough, the movie is packed with scary dolls (lookin' at you, Annabelle), great visuals, spooky make-up, haunting effects, and a talented cast. The director uses lengthy shots, forced perspective, and good, old-fashioned jump scares to freak the audience out. The first film of the Conjuring franchise has become an instant classic and has left audiences both terrified, impressed, and begging for more.

4. The Exorcist (1973)

Although the effects in this movie haven't aged well since its releas in 1973, The Exorcist is still to this day considered one of the scariest films of all time. The iconic performances of Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn are unmatched. For its time, this film was something of a spectacle and also induced so much terror in its original viewers that people fled the theatre and even vomited. Who can blame them with all those terrible things coming out of a Regan's mouth? It's a true classic and still send shivers down the spines of viewers to this day. It also incites an aversion to pea soup...

3. Saw (2004)

On a low budget, the Saw franchise introduced people to the "torture porn" genre. Everyone loved to cringe to Jigasaw's creatively horrifying torture machines. Much like Sam Raimi did with The Evil Dead, James Wan and Leigh Whannell threw everything they had into a creepy horror concept that they knew would work and, boy, did it. Love the Saw series or hate it, there's no denying that it's a great lesson for aspiring horror filmmakers.

2. The Witch (2015)

The Witch is one of those movies that caused audiences to walk out. Unfortunately, it wasn't so much out of terror than it was because of its slow pace. The film is a rather slow-burning period pic that doesn't rely on jump scares. Instead, it allows the creepy atmosphere, history behind the story, and jaw-clenching tension to introduce a new kind of horror. If you don't mind movies with slow pace, there's no denying that it's a haunting film with a respectable cast and great directorial work.

On its surface, this film seems like a home invasion thriller, but, the deeper you dive into this rabbit hole, the freakier and more horrific the discoveries become. Another French horror entry on this list, Martyrs is a deeply underrated movie. Yet, it's an extremely disturbing and almost unwatchable exercise in extreme sadism. Don't say you haven't been warned!
