We can all agree that the Shrek movies are really great, right? Okay, maybe just the first two movies are the really good ones, but this is a franchise with 👏UNDENIABLE👏 CULTURAL👏 IMPACT. Memes don't lie.
With Shrek 2 turning 20 years old this year and a fifth movie officially in development, it's the perfect time for a stroll down memory lane.
Here's a quick refresher of what happens:
Shrek (2001): Shrek meets Donkey and together they rescue Fiona, who was cursed to turn into an ogre at night. Lord Farquaad wants to marry Fiona but he is evil. Fiona eventually falls in love with Shrek and turns into an ogre full time.
Shrek 2 (2004): Shrek and Fiona are invited to visit her (human) parents, the king and queen of Far Far Away. The king hires Puss in Boots to kill Shrek, but they become friends instead. Prince Charming wants marry Fiona himself, and his mom (the Fairy Godmother) uses blackmail and magic to make this happen. Shrek becomes human for about half the movie.
Shrek the Third (2007): Fiona's father dies and Shrek does not want to rule Far Far Away, so he sets out to find Artie — as in, Arthur Pendragon — Fiona's cousin. Prince Charming wants the throne for himself and schemes to make that happen.
Shrek Forever After (2010): Shrek is overwhelmed with fatherhood and celebrity, bemoaning the fact that nobody is scared of him anymore. After an argument with Fiona, he makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin, who tricks him and sends him an alternate reality where he never met Fiona, Donkey, or any of his friends. He eventually returns to his life with newfound appreciation.
