Made In America 2014: What It Was Like To Be In The Crowd Of The John Mayer And Yeezus Set

John Mayer's set causes a lot of ruckus, while Yeezus (Kanye West) inspires peace on Grand Park... Is that Jay-Z? This weekend, 50,000+ people gathered together in Downtown Los Angeles for a two-day music festival sponsored by Budweiser. With three stages and 30 acts, the event felt like the little sister to Coachella, but with much less commitment and dust. Here's a recap of what it was like to be in the crowd for the John Mayer and Yeezus set on Day 2.

JOHN MAYER

1. No matter where you were standing in the crowd, you overheard a group of bros arguing whether it’s “gay or not“ for them to be listening to John Mayer.

2. Once the group of bros decided it wasn’t gay to listen to JM, they climbed on the catwalk and performed interpretive dances to his long guitar riffs. They were then told to get down.

3. The JM super fan in the group educated the rest of their group by letting them know that JM, is actually in fact, a “guitar guy.”

4. Things got really heated during Slow Dancing in a Burning Room. As JM sang this romantic melody, everyone starting throwing cacti at each other. Some empty plastic cups and tree bark also got thrown at a couple sitting on a fence, blocking the view of 200+ people.

5. You would think JM’s approachable outfit choice (suspenders and grandpa glasses) would inspire peace at the show, but actually everyone just started beating the shit out of each other.

6. Whoa. Things started getting really aggressive right after JM announced that the crowd was "full of good, loving people."

7. “JAY-Z! That’s definitely Jay-Z!“ I saw his shadow.” The crowd got distracted every time the security guards walked a group of people to the stage and assumed it was Jay- Z.

Logic: Jay-Z is a human. Humans cast shadows. I saw a shadow. That could possibly be Jay-Z.

Truth: Jay-Z was there. But, there’s no way every shadow cast was his.

8. The crowd was bored during JM’s Jimi Hendrix cover but went crazy for his Beyonce “XO” cover.

9. JM made a few jokes but not many people laughed. We hear he’s been spending a lot of time with Bob Saget lately.

10. “When are Yeezus and Jay-Z going on?”

YEEZUS

1. Built up aggression from John Mayer’s set died down by the time Yeezus graced the stage. Amen. All eyes on Yeezus.

2. Pretty much everyone bought a Yeezus shirt. Even nerdy boys went as far as buying the top of the line $85 Yeezus hoodie. Why? Because Yeezus skull hoodies are obviously ironic.

3. Yeezus say, Yeezus do. The crowd did everything Yeezus said. They put their hands in the air, they made a symbol of a diamond and toasted the scumbags, assholes and jerkoffs.

4. 25,000 girls screamed mantra-style, “I’d rather be a dick, than a swallower.”

5. Yes, Yeezus sang 22 songs, and yes, the other half of the time he complained about haters and assholes, and assholes and haters.

6. Even though lots of people were falling asleep, they stayed through the entire 22-song set, in hopes that any time Roca-Fella was mentioned, Jay Z would appear.

7. Everyone was certain Jay-Z was going to make an entrance like Kobe, and drop down from a helicopter.

8. “There’s Jay-Z!” Oh, wait, that’s just the hunched over crew man scurrying on the stage to change out Yeezus’s mic.

9. Pre-show rumors flew around that Yeezus would only do a few songs but actually, you couldn’t get Yeezus off the stage.

10. The first time Yeezus performed "Blood on the Leaves" was pretty cool. But then he sang it again and again. After hearing it three times, people started to wonder… A. Was the concert just one really song long? B. Is this the same song stuck on repeat? C. I think we're stuck in purgatory and are going to be listening to Blood on the Leaves for the rest of our lives.

12. Even though JM cracked jokes, Yeezus proved to be the funniest guy of the night.
