Mindy Kaling Revealed Why She's Kept Details About Her Daughter And Relationships Private

"It's really essential to my life that there be something not everybody knows about."

Back in December 2017, Mindy Kaling became a mom for the first time after giving birth to her daughter, Katherine.

And while she hasn't revealed the identity of Katherine's father, nor shared a photo of her baby's face on social media, Mindy has been very candid about being a single mother.

In fact, last year she spoke about the daunting experience of bringing Katherine home alone, saying: "I remember bringing her home and being in my house with her for the first time and thinking, 'Huh.' According to movies and TV this is traditionally the time when my mother and spouse are supposed to be here, sharing this experience with me, and I looked around and I had neither."

She went on: "But then that feeling went away, because the reality is, I'm not doing it by myself. I'm surrounded by family and friends who love and support me. And the joy I feel from being with my daughter Katherine eclipses anything."

Well, Mindy has now spoken more about her experience as a mom, revealing that she's grateful to have had her daughter when she did, otherwise she may have put off having kids "indefinitely".

Speaking to Glamour, Mindy, 39, said: "I always knew I wanted to be a mom, but I would have put it off and put it off. I'm happy that it happened when it did. I would have put it off indefinitely. I've seen firsthand the heartbreak of women who have waited to get pregnant [and then it doesn't happen]. I'm so grateful for having Katherine."

She went on to say that being a single mother has driven her to work harder since there's no one else around to "pick up the slack".

Mindy explained: "The difference is, I had my mom and my dad. She just has me. I know at some point I will have to do less, because it's not like there's a dad at home picking up some of the slack. I think that's another reason I work so hard — because I know that when she gets a little bit older, I want to be able to take off more time to spend with her."

Mindy also revealed that she believes her route into motherhood has made her even more determined to "represent the underdog" in her work.

She said: "I've always felt that I represent the underdog. At this time and this place, as an Indian woman and a single mom, I've felt like the kind of person who often does not get to be the lead of a story. I want the stories that I tell, the characters I play and create, to resonate with people who do not see themselves onscreen."

And Mindy concluded by revealing the reason she's chosen to keep both the details of her daughter and relationships private.

She said: "I feel entitled to have privacy about my daughter and my relationships. It's really essential to my life that there be something not everybody knows about. That's a boundary, but it’s a very small boundary. Everything else I really don’t have any issue sharing."
