The Definitive Ranking Of "Harry Potter" Deaths By Sadness

Get ready for the feels.

Posted on

26. Tom Riddle/Lord Voldemort

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Harry Potter.

Voldemort was just the actual worst. He killed people for no reason — including his own supporters — and all he cared about was power. Everyone cheered when he died, and for good reason.

25. Bellatrix Lestrange

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Molly Weasley.

There was nothing good about Bellatrix other than her apparent love for Voldemort. She put him over her family, and eventually died fighting for him. So she sucks.

24. Nagini

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Neville Longbottom.

Nagini was just an animal, so we can't really blame her for biting people's necks - but she also contained a part of Voldemort's soul. So she sucks. (Pun intended.)

23. Professor Quirrell

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, killed by Harry Potter.

Not only did Quirrell try to kill Harry when he was only 11 years old, he also killed several unicorns and set a troll loose in the Hogwarts dungeon on Halloween. Oh, plus the fact that he had Voldemort sticking out the back of his head.

22. Peter Pettigrew

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed himself (technically).

Wormtail did a whole bunch of bad things: he betrayed James and Lily Potter to Voldemort, framed Sirius Black for a lot of murders, and (essentially) brought Voldemort back to life. His only redeeming feature was that he died after allowing Harry and Ron to go free.

21. Gellert Grindelwald

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Voldemort.

Grindelwald was a super dark wizard who only stopped doing awful things because Dumbledore defeated him. This one's a little sad, though, because of the star-crossed lovers thing.

20. Vincent Crabbe

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by (his own) Fiendfyre.

Although Crabbe was definitely a douchebag, he was born into life as a Death Eater and really had no chance. His ultimate demise — despite being his own fault — was kinda sad, because he didn't really understand what he was getting himself into.

19. Barty Crouch Sr

Warner Bros

Death: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, killed by Barty Crouch Jr.

Although his death itself was sad - being killed by your own son who disguised himself as a different person after you freed him from prison is not only complicated, but also a little depressing - it's undeniable that Crouch was kind of an asshole.

18. Rufus Scrimgeour

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Voldemort.

Scrimgeour died trying to save Harry - and he gets credit for that - but he was also kind of annoying every time he made an appearance.

17. Gregorovitch

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Voldemort.

We don't get to know much about Gregorovitch, and that's why he's not higher on the list. All the poor old guy did was make the mistake of knowing things about the Elder Wand.

16. Charity Burbage

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Voldemort.

Again, we don't know much about Charity Burbage other than she was killed for being the Muggle Studies teacher at Hogwarts. That definitely doesn't mean she deserves to be killed and then eaten by a giant snake.

14. Bathilda Bagshot

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Voldemort.

Bathilda Bagshot was obviously smart and successful - she wrote A History of Magic - and she was just a helpless old lady when Voldemort killed her and used her body to lure Harry to his potential death. Sad. :(

13. Frank Bryce

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, killed by Voldemort.

Frank Bryce was just a powerless Muggle who didn't know what he was wandering into. Poor guy.

12. Cedric Diggory

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, killed by Wormtail.

We never found out enough about Cedric for his death to be ~super devastating~, but it was the first real good-guy death of the series, and that counts for something.

11. Severus Snape

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Nagini.

So Snape may not have been a great guy, but he was definitely brave, and his death was a double-cross on Voldemort's part. His whole life kind of sucked overall, to be honest.

9. Lavender Brown

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Fenrir Greyback.

Lavender may have been incredibly annoying in life, but she definitely didn't deserve to die, and being killed by a werewolf is probably one of the worst ways to go in the wizarding world.

8. Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by a Death Eater.

It seemed like Moody was way too tough to die - he survived being kept in a trunk by a crazy person for almost a year - so when Bill delivered the news that he had been hit with a killing curse, it was super sad. But it's how he would have wanted to go.

7. Hedwig

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, hit by a killing curse.

Hedwig was basically Harry's bestie - even when he had no one at the Dursleys', she was there for him. Her death was super unexpected, and therefore super sad. :(

6. Albus Dumbledore

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, killed by Severus Snape.

Everyone kind of knew Dumbledore's death was coming - he was getting old and sick throughout the course of Half-Blood Prince - but it was still kind of a shock. He was Harry's guide, and super wise, and it seemed like he was going to be around forever. Plus, the simplicity of it was kind of devastating.

5. Nymphadora Tonks

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, reason unknown.

Tonks' storyline throughout the series is one of the saddest: falls in love with someone she can't have, spends years having her affection ignored, finally marries him and has a baby, they both die. Seriously.

4. Remus Lupin

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, reason unknown.

Not only was Lupin the father figure Harry never had (and he was around more than Sirius), but he died protecting the community that had outcast him since he was a child. At least the Marauders are reunited.

3. Dobby

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, killed by Bellatrix Lestrange.

After suffering years of abuse at the hand of the Malfoy family, Dobby defies his old masters (which is very difficult for House Elves) and rescues Harry, Ron, and Hermione from the hands of the Death Eaters and Voldemort. If you didn't cry when Dobby died, you are probably heartless.

2. Sirius Black

Warner Bros.

Death: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, killed by Bellatrix Lestrange.

After being imprisoned for twelve years for a crime he didn't commit and then forced to stay in hiding for the next two, it seemed like Sirius was about to catch a break and have his name cleared, and then he died. Harry lost his godfather. And he didn't even have his body to bury and mourn over. Ugh.
