21 Movies That'll Actually Make You Happy To Be Single

Because the most important kind of love is self-love.

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us which movies actually made them happy to be single. Here are some of their responses.

1. (500) Days of Summer (2009)

Fox Searchlight Pictures

"At first it made me feel for Tom and his heartbreak. When I came back to it later, I realised that I’ve been Summer too. You can’t force yourself to be with someone who doesn’t make you happy, no matter how high a pedestal that person puts you on. It also made me realise the difference between love and infatuation."

5. My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)

TriStar Pictures

"It’s funny and charming but it’s also tender and surprisingly raw at some parts. I especially love that the movie places Jules’s struggle with herself front and centre, rather than ~drama~ with others."

8. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Universal Pictures

"It was the only thing that made me laugh when I was in a breakup black hole. I totally empathised with the main character as he flung himself around in self-indulgent despair until he just worked through it. I watched it before bed every night for a week as therapy after my last breakup – it reminded me I could be my own person again and move on."

11. The Way, Way Back (2013)

Fox Searchlight Pictures

"I’m a single mother who has been raising my son alone since he was born. I was in an unhealthy relationship when I saw the movie – I called off my engagement shortly afterwards and have LOVED my life since. I got a rescue dog and I’ll die happily surrounded by 75 rescue dogs and without someone else’s shit."

12. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Focus Features

"When you have been with someone for a very long time and next thing you know everything is over, the best thing that can happen to you is that your brain blocks out all of the memories you had with that person."

15. Love Actually (2003)

Universal Pictures

"Some people ended up happily ever after, some didn't, and some found other forms of love. It’s my favourite movie in all senses: It makes you understand love in other forms. After all, love actually is all around."

19. Amélie (2001)

UGC Fox Distribution

"She was so content with her life until the right person came along. I watched it right before my last breakup with my long term boyfriend and found myself envying Amélie and how free she was. My ex is one of the best people I've ever met, but I wasn't happy being with him. Amélie reminded me that I can be happy alone – I don't need to be in a relationship, especially if it's not working."

20. Legally Blonde (2001)

"Even though she was single, Elle realised that all she needed was to love herself and be true to who she was to find acceptance. Once she learned to love herself she got everything she wanted: the job, a better man, and friendship from Vivian."
