Back To You Will: The Newsroom Season 3 Episode 1 Recap

Hard core news, on a Sunday night can only mean one thing The Newsroom is back. And who is not excited for the final season of the epic Emmy nominated show? HBO is really tugging at our heart string during this last ode to great news. But enough of that now let's get to what matters. They Story.

The Boston Marathon

We commend Aaron Sorkin for opening the season with the Boston Marathon Bombing. That race was one of the most televised and highly viewed pieces of news in this country during 2013. Their reenactment of the entire debacle was flawless. Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) and the team were back at it, while simultaneously still trying regain their credibility after Genoa. Might we also add that we love Charlie! When CNN had to retract an earlier statement the newsroom cheered with joy. But Charlie and Will interjected and reminded everyone that no so long ago that Atlantis Cable News (ACN) had to the same thing. Props go out to Charlie for holding up his fellow journalists during their time of need.

Mac and Will's wedding

I think one of two things will happen. Either Mac (Emily Mortimer) and Will are going to get married at the end of the season as a sort of farewell and happy ending tribute or Mac is going to back out of the wedding for some reason. We just don't want Will to get his heart broken again. Hasn't he had enough? on another wedding note Mac has nine bridesmaids including Diane Sawyer which we find very comical. But not as hilarious as Will's one groomsman being Charlie, who also happens to be the best man. The solution he offered to Mac for his numerically challenged groom problem was that Charlie escort each of the bridesmaids down the aisle. Let's just say that Mac's face was priceless.

Neal is this seasons Edward Snowden.

Or rather we believe that Neal may be receiving information from Edward Snowden and that Snowden is going to be tied into the season heavily. After receiving an encrypted message, Neil decides to see if the source is credible by following the instructions from the source. Which involves going to ransoms restaurants men's bathroom to see if there is actually a USB hidden inside a toilet. Which is super gross! However it turned out that the source was credible and there was a USB in the toilet that contained tens of thousands of classified government documents. Now if this doesn’t get you then this will. Neal asks for more documentation to see if this source is legitimate. Once he tells this to Will, Mac, Charlie, and Reese, he finds out that he has committed a federal offense. Which freaked us out more than it did him. But honestly we felt for little Neal as his eyes filled with tears during the final minutes. One thing is for sure Neal is going to have a big story line this season and it is going to involve guest star Marcia Gay Harden, as his highly paid, satirical, yet caring lawyer.

Social Media is among us

Neal Says that Social Media is going to solve the Boston Bombing, and he isn’t far off. Although ACN isn’t into “citizen journalism” they may have to find a way through their distrust. After all through it they will be able to break some amazing coverage. The network has also seems to have hired Jim’s Girlfriend Hallie (Grace Gummer) as another social media guru for the network. Her and Neal are going to be an interesting team.

The Numbers are low.

So after being infamously known as the number two network for news, the team does not handle it well when they drop to number four. But how accurate is it? Witty Sloan uncovers that Reese Lansing’s siblings, who will be played by guest stars Kat Dennings and B.J. Novak, are trying to buy out the network. Which is just lovely. A hostile take over and a bunch of lawsuits are just what these journalist need right? If no on had a drinking problem, then they do now.

Let’s talk about Maggie

So we know last season that Maggie went through some stuff that most people would not have been able to handle so gracefully. Minus the whole "cutting off your hair and dying it Ariel red." But hey we can't blame her. She is somewhat back and blonde again. Her and Elliott decide to head to Boston to cover the story from there. Jim, her biggest advocate, says she is ready to be out in the field again. Which she happens to prove beautifully. When Elliot has an allergic reaction, Maggie has to go on air and report what is happening in Boston. Not only is her reporting remarkable she also makes us wonder what else does the Maggie Jordan have in store for us this season. We also want to know if her and Jim are going to go back together too? Fingers crossed!
