People Are Sharing The "Old" Movies They Think Still Hold Up Today, And If You Haven't Seen All Of These, You Should

Surprise, surprise, Steven Spielberg has several on here.

A lot of times movies come out, everyone loves them, but as years go by, fans soon realize the movie was actually not that great. However, there are the rare films that are so well made that even as new audiences discover them or older audiences revisit them, it continues to knock them off their feet.

So, when Reddit user Da_Verminator posed the question, "What old movie (20+ years) still holds up today?" to the r/AskReddit community, they came up with some very solid answers. Here are the top-voted responses:

    1. Jurassic Park (1993)

"It's nearly 30 years old, but the effects and especially the CGI still hold up today."

"The practical effects give everything so much weight it’s amazing. It looked state of the art for 10+ years."

    2. Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986)

"For Aliens, make certain you're watching the director's cut. It only adds around 5 minutes to the film, but it fills in so many plot holes. I can't imagine who thought the Automated Turrets and the fate of Ripley's daughter belonged on the cutting room floor."

    3. Office Space (1999)

"I think the deepest part of Office Space is how it's a comedy when you're young, and borders on a documentary as you get older."

    4. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

"Several family members were WWII vets, the ones that saw combat couldn't talk about it. But my great uncle, who served in the Pacific, was able to say some things when he saw Saving Private Ryan. Things he had wanted to say for years but couldn't... And very chilling things when taken in context."

    5. Schindler's List (1993)

"Whenever some cinesnob starts badmouthing Spielberg I love to point out that he released Jurassic Park AND Schindler's List in the same fucking year. Two completely different but equally amazing films. He's had some misses, for sure. But dude is still a genius imo."

    6. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

"Just read the novella for the first time. It's lovely, but they managed to improve upon it for the movie. My favorite discovery was that in the story, Red really is a redhead. When asked why he's called Red he says, 'I don't know. Maybe it's because I'm Irish.' And they just kept that line in the movie despite casting Morgan Freeman, which gives it a new and hilarious twist."

    7. 12 Angry Men (1957)

"The film is over 60 years old and it still holds up so well."

    8. The Truman Show (1998)

"I love this movie. I have an annual tradition of watching it on a night in the middle of January when it's freezing outside. I even turn the heater down in the house."

    10. Goodfellas (1990)

"As far back as I can remember, this has been my go-to movie."

    11. The Princess Bride (1987)

"The book is really great too. I recommend reading it! It goes into a lot more detail about all of their backstories."

    12. My Cousin Vinny (1992)

"I scrolled looking for this specific movie. My coworker recommended it to me a few years ago, and now all of my friends and I think it's one of the best movies ever."

    13. Die Hard (1988)

"This could be released today, as it is. It's unlike anything else of the late '80s."

    14. The Matrix (1999)

"In both special effects and cultural relevance, it really hasn’t aged."

    15. Tombstone (1993)

"Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday made that movie. I'll be your huckleberry."

    16. Tremors (1990)

"For a B movie, Tremors slaps like a faith healer."

    17. Toy Story (1995)

    Buzz yelling at Woody

"I truly watched this for the first time in 2020. I was 12 when it was first put out. I’m 38 now. It’s a great flick."

    18. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Hannibal Lecter talking to Clarice through a glass prison celloo

"Will anyone ever be able to exude as much intelligent menace as Anthony Hopkins? 16 minutes of screentime in that movie and one of the most memorable villains of all time. Talk about a...scene chewer."

    19. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

"My kid is too young to have seen the movie (almost 2) and he was marching around saying 'ni' over and over again yesterday. Made me excited for when we can watch the movie together."

    20. Back to the Future (1985)

Doc sitting in the DeLorean time machine and Marty recording him with a VHS camcorder

    "A 'timeless' classic."

    21. Galaxy Quest (1999)

Sir Alexander and Gwen sitting at a table signing autographs
    Dreamworks / Courtesy Everett Collection

"Was very surprised and pleased when I watched this as an adult. It's not just a spoof film like it seems to be from the outside. Don't get me wrong, I love a good spoof or just silly movie in general, but the story itself was actually quite good. I would argue that Galaxy Quest is just as good, and if not better, than most of the Star Trek movies. If you don't genuinely care about the alien species by the end of the movie and aren't rooting for them to win, then your heart might just be cold and dead."

    22. Good Will Hunting (1997)

"My husband and I rewatched it this year and I have to agree. I thought it was going to feel heavy handed like so many older movies can, but Gus Van Sant really is timeless in his filmmaking. I really believe it’s a winning combination of his direction, Affleck and Damon’s writing, the music from Danny Elfman and Elliot Smith, and the performances, especially Robin Williams'. It didn’t feel 20+ years old at all."

    23. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

"It's one of the only movies that I will watch every time I see it on the channel guide."

    26. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Sarah Connor standing in the dessert holding a rifle and looking bad ass

"The effects still stand up, Robert Patrick is menacing for being so slight, and it’s an absolute epic of a story. I watch it whenever I catch it on TV."

    27. Young Frankenstein (1974)

"I'm a teacher and I have to bite my tongue every time I get a student called Abbie."

    28. Clueless (1995)

Cher and Dionne writing a secret love letter in the teacher's lounge
Paramount Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection

"The biggest issue I have with Clueless is that I can't read Jane Austen's Emma now. I keep hearing the voices as Cher and Dionne and it's just too jarring 🤣."

    29. And finally, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987)

    Paramount / Courtesy Everett Collection

"Just two comedic geniuses doing great work. NBD."
