Fair warning: There are spoilers ahead. Although, if you haven't watched the latest episode of Game of Thrones yet, WTF are you doing here?? Go and watch it now!
OK, for the rest of you. Let's talk about everyone's favorite (former) Bear Island ruler, Lyanna Mormont.
When Lyanna "queen of fierce looks" Mormont met her untimely death at the hands of a wight giant during the Battle of Winterfell, people were unsurprisingly upset. But MOSTLY they were like, "Damn, this girl deserves ALL the respect."
Seriously, how are you not gonna cheer for this hero's death!
Because, let's be real, she outdid just about everyone in that battle. (Except for maybe, like, Arya...IDK, tough call.)
And while some of us maybe wish she'd survived the battle, it turns out we got so much more of her than we were ever really supposed to. Because, as it turns out, Lyanna Mormont was originally only going to appear once on the show.
During Episode 3's "Inside the Episode" segment, co-showrunner D.B. Weiss explained, "Lyanna Mormont was supposed to be a one-scene character."
Weiss continued, "And then we met Bella Ramsey (the young actor who plays Lyanna Mormont), and we realized that we would NOT be doing our jobs if we kept her as a one-scene character."
Ramsey herself told Entertainment Weekly that she also thought she was gonna just have that one small part. She explained, "I didn’t think it was going to be anything. I just thought that I turned up and did it. When [the fan reaction] kicked up it was mad. I didn’t expect it."
Speaking of her character's death, Ramsey continued, "Her story maybe had the potential to grow but she was going to go at some point, because everyone does, and this way she went was the best way she could have."
