"Scandal," "Schitt's Creek," And "Ocean's 11": These On-Screen Couples Are Still The Closest Of Friends In Real Life

"We're bonded for life."

One of the most important parts of all of our favorite TV shows and movies is the chemistry of the cast, especially the leads. When the chemistry is right, it produces some of the most beautiful moments and allows us to feel completely invested in the relationship between these characters!

Sometimes, the chemistry between the leads is SO good that it actually turns into really meaningful relationships beyond the set, and these on-screen couples turned real-life best friends will prove it:

1. Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn from Scandal

Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn played Olivia Pope and President Fitzgerald Grant in ABC's 2012 hit series Scandal. Just recently, Tony celebrated his 63rd birthday — and Kerry took to Instagram to post the cutest new selfies of the two of them. She even teased him (and all of us, honestly) by saying, "I told @tonygoldwyn that #Olitz is trending on TikTok for his birthday. He’s clearly VERY excited."

Like, okay, you two, fine, I'll go watch Scandal for the 20th time.

2. Abbi Jacobson and D'Arcy Carden from A League Of Their Own

Abbi and D'Arcy actually met in an improv class over a decade before they played love interests Carson Shaw and Greta Gill in the Amazon Prime TV adaptation of the 1992 movie A League Of Their Own!

Last year, in an interview with Glamour, Abbi and D'Arcy spoke about how their friendship continued to develop as they both went to new heights in their careers. At one point, D'Arcy was cast to play a retail store employee in the pilot episode of the 2014 show, Broad City — which was Abbi's hit Comedy Central series that she co-created and starred in with Ilana Glazer. Unfortunately, the scene that D'Arcy was set to be in was cut from the final project, but she later found herself in a five-episode run of the series as a brand new character! She told Abbi in the interview, "You had my back. She always stuck out her neck for me, and it truly changed my life."

3. Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy from Schitt's Creek

Catherine and Eugene have actually known each other since back in the '70s, when they were both a part of the improv troupe at Second City Theater in Toronto together — and they've remained friends and have worked together plenty of times ever since! Apart from working together at Second City Theater and in Schitt's Creek, they've also been in eight films together. They even attempted dating, but even though it didn't work out, they eventually found themselves playing married couple Moira and Johnny Rose on Schitt's Creek.

The beloved comedy duo spoke with BuzzFeed back in 2014 and Catherine spoke on how friendship can translate on screen by saying "I like knowing when people know each other and have a history; that comes across on screen. I think it's fun for people to see. It is for me."

4. Charlotte Ritchie and Mae Martin from Feel Good

Charlotte and Mae play love interests George and Mae in the 2020 Netflix series Feel Good, which was actually co-created by Mae! This is another duo that happened to know each other before they played love interests. Mae told Autostraddle in 2020, "Charlotte is a friend of mine, and we’d been in LA together, and she’d been doing this deep American accent as a joke. I knew I wanted to get it in there and make her do it. She nailed it so much. That was a really hard scene to get through because I was laughing so hard."

5. Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio from Titanic

Ah, yes, the first movie couple I vividly remember seeing and thinking, "I completely understand what love is," because of how incredibly they portrayed their roles as Rose and Jack in the 1997 classic Titanic. They even went on to play a troubled married couple in the 2008 movie Revolutionary Road. Back in 2021, Kate Winslet explained to The Guardian that due to COVID, they weren't able to see each other and had only recently reunited after three years of being separated. Kate had this to say about her and Leo's relationship: "He's my friend, my really close friend. We're bonded for life."

6. Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall from But I'm A Cheerleader

Natasha and Clea became close on the set of the 1999 film But I'm A Cheerleader when they played love interests, Megan and Graham! They later went on to play a couple once again in the 2016 movie The Intervention, which actually served as Clea's directorial debut. Clea and Natasha have remained close friends since they were on set in 1999, and when Clea and Natasha spoke with the Criterion Collection, Clea had this to say about working with Natasha: "Every [But I'm A Cheerleader] take felt good and right because we were so present with each other in a way that I can’t say I’ve been with very many actors in my career. That feeling came back when Natasha was in the first movie I directed. We played girlfriends, and it was that same kind of easy, lived-in feeling."

7. Julia Roberts and George Clooney from Ocean's Eleven

Julia and George have been on the screen together for years — they first played love interests in the 2001 movie Ocean's Eleven, and as the years went on, they found themselves working together again in many different spaces. George was a director and producer for two of Julia's movies, they also co-chaired the Met Gala together back in 2008, starred alongside each other back in 2016 in the film Money Monster, and just recently they starred together as a divorced couple in the 2022 movie Ticket To Paradise! Last year, Julia and George spoke with People and George had this to say about her, "Listen, the thing about Julia, one of the many great qualities, is she is consistent in her loyalty and in her friendship and in her kindness, so if you'd ask me what's different, I'd say that with the exception of us getting a little bit older, nothing in terms of who we are, or who you are."

8. Emma Watson and Rupert Grint from Harry Potter

Emma Watson and Rupert Grint played beloved characters Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter series, and after spending their entire lives together, of course, they remain the closest of friends (along with Daniel, too)! Back in 2022, HBO released a 20-year reunion special for the series and during the special, Rupert tells Emma, "Even though we don’t see each other all the time, yeah. It’s a strong bond that we will always have, and we will always be part of each other’s lives."

9. Selena Gomez and Cara Delevingne from Only Murders In The Building

Cara and Selena actually first met in 2013, on a shoot for Selena's clothing brand Dream Out Loud, and they've remained friends ever since! Cara and Selena are known to vacation together, spend holidays together, and attend major industry events together as well. The two longtime friends recently played love interests Mabel and Alice in Selena's award-winning show Only Murders In The Building.

10. Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller from The Spectacular Now

After playing love interests Aimee and Sutter in the movie The Spectacular Now, they later played enemies Peter and Beatrice in the Divergent series! Over the years, Shailene and Miles have been known to speak about their close friendship, and in 2021, they also went on vacation together with Miles' wife and Shailene's then-fianceé. Just recently, after the success of Top Gun: Maverick, Shailene went on to sing praises for Miles in a now-deleted Instagram post, exclaiming that she felt like it was a "proud sister moment" after she saw the movie!

11. Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet from Dune

Zendaya and Timothée played love interests Chani and Paul in the critically acclaimed movie Dune in 2021 and have since been giving us all the silly content. If you happen to keep up with celebrities, I'm sure you've seen these two goofing around literally everywhere they go. The chemistry between Timothée and Zendaya is out of this world, and you can really tell when you see the two of them interact. The press tours for Dune and Dune: Part Two have given us nothing but moments of friendship from these two, from hyping each other up during photo ops to goofing around on the red carpet — this is a friendship we hope lasts a long time.
