This might sound a little crazy, but I’ve managed about 15 years controlling panic attacks without meds so here goes…
If I feel one coming on, I start breathing slowly and deeply. If I can get to a bathroom, I sit on the toilet and go through the motions of trying to go to the bathroom. The theory is that panic triggers the flight or fight response and the last thing you need to do when running for your life is to have to stop to go to the bathroom. Breathing and pretending to go to the bathroom overrides the response cascade and though it takes a few minutes to clear the hormones out, it does help tell your brain that things are ok.
The other thing I do is vent, loudly and often, as my trigger tends to be anger that I am trying to ignore. I find that when I try to bottle things up, it eventually comes back to bite me and triggers raging panic attacks. I might come across as being a real bitch, but I rarely have them now and nothing is worth the feeling of a full blown panic attack.
