13 Magical Halloween Details You'll Only See At Disneyland

Disneyland is SPOOKTACULAR this time of year.

As any Disney fan knows, Disneyland is probably the most magical place on earth. And the resort feels ESPECIALLY enchanting during certain times of the year, like summer and around Christmas.

But we're here to tell you about a spooktacularly magical season that you have to see to BOO-lieve: HALLOWEEN TIME!!!

Here are some of the most enchanting details you'll only be able to check out if you visit Disneyland and California Adventure during Halloween Time:

1. The Main Street Mickey Pumpkin

OK, so this one is hard to miss (it's literally a giant Mickey jack-o'-lantern in the middle of Main Street U.S.A.). But, it's def worth your time to wait in line and get that perfect selfie in front (or have it taken by the Disneyland photographer). Also, it has two sides with two different faces, so make sure you choose the side you like best, or do both!

2. The Main Street Pumpkin Festival

When walking down Main Street, make sure to take a second to look around at the jack-o’-lanterns that adorn the buildings, there are hundreds of them and they all have different faces.

3. The Halloween Tree

Located inside Frontierland next to the Golden Horseshoe Saloon is "The Halloween Tree," an oak tree that is decorated in dozens of little jack-o'-lanterns and orange Christmas lights. The tree was inspired by Ray Bradbury’s novel The Halloween Tree, and, in fact, the tree was dedicated to him in 2007.

4. Día de los Muertos Celebration

Located within Frontierland in Zócalo Park (right next to Big Thunder Mountain) is a nice tribute to Día de los Muertos.

5. A photo with Jack Skellington and Sally

Jack and Sally don't do regular appearances in the park, but during Halloween Time you can get a photo with them in Court of Angels located in New Orleans.

6. Haunted Mansion Holiday

Alright, so The Nightmare Before Christmas-themed overlay goes through the holidays, but let's be honest, it's way more fun to ride it now. Disneyland is also one of only two Disney parks in the entire world that does this (the other is Tokyo Disneyland) and it's chock-full of so many little details that you can ride it over and over and still find new things. This is also the 17th year that the ride gets the seasonal overlay.

Bonus: The Gingerbread House inside the Mansion

Each year the gingerbread house on display in the ballroom is different, and this year, with the 25th anniversary of The Nightmare Before Christmas, they went all out. The gingerbread house is made up of 90 pounds of gingerbread, 30 pounds of confectioner’s sugar, 10 pounds of white chocolate, and 45 pounds of fondant and is topped with a giant five-foot spider (that also has glowing eyes).

7. Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy

This spooky and well done overlay can only be found here at Disneyland and at Hong Kong Disneyland!

Warning: if you have little ones be aware that the ride is EXTRA dark (yup, it's darker than usual) and features a ghost that pops up from time to time. So you might want to opt out if you think it's too intense for your kids.

8. Buena Vista Street

Disneyland may get a great Halloween makeover, but it's actually Disney California Adventure that really goes all out!!! One area that gets a great overlay is Buena Vista Street. It's worth looking at all the window displays throughout the street, 'cause they have a TON of elaborate theming to them.

9. Headless Horseman Statue

Located across from the Carthay Circle Restaurant on Buena Vista Street is a statue dedicated to one of the scariest animated Disney Villains ever: the Headless Horseman. While you can for sure grab a great pic in front of it during the day, it's best to get it at night, when the statue puts on an eerie show with different lighting, sounds, and effects.

10. Plaza de la Familia

The Paradise Garden Grill, located at the Paradise Gardens Park section of the park, has gotten a Coco-themed makeover. It's also the location where the "A Musical Celebration of Coco" show is put on — which features a mariachi band and folklórico dancers, as well as puppet of Miguel, that sings along to some of the songs from the film.

11. The World of Coco

This small exhibit devoted to Coco features three-dimensional reproductions of some "props" from the film.

12. Cars Land Haul-O-Ween overlay

So, Cars Land is already one of the most impressive and detail-filled lands of any land at any Disney park in the world, but the theming is really amped for Halloween Time. Along with Halloween decorations that are made to look like they fit within the Cars universe (like a pumpCAN patch and jack-oil-lanterns), the stores and rides (sans Radiator Springs Racers) are also given a spooky overlay.

Everyday at sunset, Cars Land lights up its neon lights just like in the film — complete with the song "Sh-Boom." For Halloween Time they do it with a twist, instead of the "Sh-Boom," the lighting ceremony is timed to Screamin' Jay Hawkins classic, "I Put a Spell on You."

13. Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark

Unlike all the other Halloween-themed overlays rides get, this one is unique...it isn't all day. The transformation from the regular Mission: Breakout! to Monsters After Dark happens after the sun sets, at which point the Collector’s Fortress goes dark, alarms sound, and before finally lighting up again with creepy lighting. Once inside the ride queue and storyline completely different. All this makes for maybe the best ride in the park!
