They're the place where we prepare meals, the most raucously sociable room in parties and the source of a lot of household-related drama. Some things happen daily while others just happen when we're caught off guard or distracted by the TV/kids/partner/dog. Cutlery curse
You've done the washing up in the sink, you feel accomplished as an adult - maybe even a little proud. You pour the residue dishwater out of the washing up bowl and into the dark depths of the sink plughole. Then, CLANG, a stowaway spoon hits the bottom. Guaranteed, there will always be at least one knife, fork or spoon that you missed when doing the washing up. No matter how hard you fumble around in the water, you'll never find it. It's the Cutlery Curse.
Tea towel oven gloves
Most of us bear great kitchen battle scars of the oven glove substitute - the tea towel. Whether you've misplaced your actual oven glove, couldn't be bothered to use it or just don't own one then you're putting yourself at risk of searing your fingers with a badly folded tea towel. Just when you think you've trained the tea towel to do exactly what you want, there will be a little nook where your hand slips and makes contact with the lava-hot oven tray. Another sub-drama of this is realising oven racks are too high or too low for your food and having to move them when the oven is already hot. Always respect the godly status of the oven glove.
Forgetting to put the lid on the blender
There is no doubt in our minds that every single one of you has done this at some point. You might be tired from a hard day's graft, greatly distracted or just plain old clumsy, but forgetting to put the lid on the blender or food mixer is a disastrous move. Wearing a new designer shirt? Forget it, it's covered in pureed, organic smoothie and has been sacrificed to the kitchen blender gods. However, this is side-splittingly funny for anyone watching this drama unfurl.
Smoke alarm going off for the smallest of things
This situation goes something like this: "Hi there, this is your smoke alarm! So you want to make some nice, hot buttery toast, do you? Great! Let me beep with excitement for you even though the toast is only slightly blackened and the windows are open. Frying bacon? I just have to embarrass you and let the neighbourhood know - beep! Beep! Beep!" Enough said. But at least you know your fire alarm is working...
Chilli in your eye and onions making you cry
What could be worse than tears caused by chopping onions? Well- doing that and wiping your eyes after you've chopped chillies at the same time! Sometimes we forget that we've chopped chillies, rub our eyes and proceed to momentarily blind ourselves. However, with onions we always anticipate the waterworks. But there are ways you can prevent this from happening. Just wear latex gloves while chopping chilli and wash your hands afterwards just to be safe. If it's too late for that then apply petroleum jelly or olive oil for chilli burns on the skin or milk if it gets in your eyes. To stop tears from chopping onions just put it in the freezer 10-15 mins before you need to use it - or stick a piece of bread in your mouth.
Food in the sink
Plunging your hand down the kitchen sink plughole is like a lucky dip - only without the luck...and lot's of dip. Slithers of smushed up food mixed with dirt and grime are all clumped together ready for you to accidentally caress them and then scream in a mixture of horror and disgust. The moral of this story is...scrape your plates properly!
