Ruby Rose Said She's "Stayed Silent For Now" About The Reason She Left "Batwoman" After Reports Of Behind-The-Scenes Drama

"I have stayed silent because that's my choice for now."

Ruby Rose has made her first social media statement about her departure from Batwoman but remained vague on the reasons behind the decision.

Back in 2018, it was announced that the Orange is the New Black actor would take on the role of Kate Kane in the CW show. The news was a pretty big deal, not least because the network revealed it wouldn't be shying away from their titular character's sexuality.

In promo for the show, the network called Kate: "An out lesbian and highly trained street fighter."

"The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored," Ruby wrote at the time of the announcement. "This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on TV and felt alone and different."

However, after only one season, it was revealed last week that Ruby wouldn't be returning to the show, with the actor calling it a "very difficult decision" that hadn't been made lightly.

"I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show," Ruby said in a statement. "I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created."

She added: "Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success — I am truly grateful."

The network and production company behind Batwoman released a statement of their own, thanking Ruby for "her contributions to the success" of the show, before revealing they would be recasting the superhero role in time for the second season.

However, reports following the announcement suggested that things hadn't exactly been harmonious behind-the-scenes and that "friction on set" led to the departure.

According to Variety, multiple sources claimed that Ruby was "unhappy with the long hours required of her as the series lead" and that it was this that had been the catalyst behind the decision.

The same report further refuted claims that the decision had anything to do with Ruby's health or that it was a result of injuries she'd suffered during filming.

Another report claimed that Ruby "wasn't happy" while working on the show and so a joint decision had been reached.

Sources apparently told TV Line: "It was a breakup. She wasn't happy working on the show, and did that make her fun to work with? No. So everyone decided it would be in the best interests of the show, and for all concerned, if they parted ways. It just wasn’t a good fit."

Now, Ruby has posted a new statement on Instagram, acknowledging her silence on the situation and cryptically adding: "It wasn't an easy decision but those who know, know."

Posting a compilation video from the show, Ruby thanked the cast and crew before hanging up her cape.

"I have stayed silent because that's my choice for now but know I adore you all," Ruby concluded. "I'm sure next season will be amazing also."

Ruby Rose's representatives had no further comment when contacted by BuzzFeed News.
