Before you, there's a path that leads you deeper into the woods where your friend's cabin awaits. You've been there before but never at nighttime.

The Start

You decide to keep walking. The faster you get to the cabin, the better. As you walk, you listen to the sound of the crickets and the wind rustling through the trees. Keep walking.

Before venturing off into the dark on your own, you decide to call your friend to see if they can meet you. Call your friend.

_C'mon, you're old enough to spend a few seconds in the dark,_  you think to yourself as you turn off the flashlight on your phone and start calling your friend in the dark. Before the phone even has a chance to ring, you get an error message. No signal. 

Turn the light off and call them.

You decide to shoot them a quick text, but after sending "HEY, I'M HERE. COULD YOU MEET ME HALF-WAY? I'M KINDA SCARED LOL," the message fails to send. _Great. Just great,_ you think. That's when you hear the snap of a twig behind you. You turn around, pointing your flashlight at the line of trees, but there's nothing there. You're really freaking yourself out. You'd better get a move on. The faster you get to the cabin, the better. When you get to a fork in the path, you realize that you can't quite remember which way to go.

Try to text them.

You decide to keep walking. The faster you get to the cabin, the better. As you walk, you listen to the sound of the crickets and the wind rustling through the trees. Start on the path toward the cabin.

You decide to go right. You're pretty sure this is the way. And – look at that – you were correct! The cabin is just ahead, but... wait a second. The windows are dark. Where's your friend? You knock but no one answers. The front door's unlocked so you go inside and call out for your friend. There's no response. When you try to turn on the light, nothing happens. You take a look at your phone and see that it's on 6%. It's going to die any second. Hmmm, didn't the lights go out the last time you were here? BEGINNING - Go right.

You decide to go left. You're pretty sure this is the right way. But as you're walking things are getting less and less familiar. Just when you're about to turn around, you think you hear something following you along the path so you decide to pick up your speed. The path leads to a clearing, and you see two cabins – one of them is painted baby pink and the other looks very old and worn. Through the windows of both cabins, you can see light which means they're both occupied. _Maybe one of them has a landline I can use or – at the very least – can give me directions,_ you think. At any rate, you want to get off the path and out of the woods for a bit. BEGINNING - Go left.

The attic sounds like a better idea so you search the ceiling for the entrance. You find it in the kitchen where you pull the draw string, revealing the mouth of the attic and the ladder that folds down to the floor. Above your head, there's only a rectangle of black. _It's just the dark,_ you remind yourself. _It can't hurt you._ You begin your ascent into the attic where the only source of light is your quickly dying phone. Investigate the attic.

Looking for the generator sounds like a good plan. As you head for the basement door, you remember a scary story your friend told you. It was something about a ghost named Bloody Mariah who had been murdered here in the basement years ago and that her spirit still haunts this place. And you can see the very spot where she had been murdered because there's still a dark spot on the concrete from where her blood had pooled. But that was just a story, right? Hmm.... Investigate the basement.

You decide to go down to the basement anyway. After all, it’s just a silly old ghost story. Continue to the basement.

You decide to take a look. Close up, it actually kind of looks like the shape of a woman, but it has to be some kind of coincidental chemical stain or something, right? You decide to take a photo to send to your friend. Maybe you'll both get a kick out of this once they get here. Your flashlight turns off as you open the camera, and you're swallowed by the dark. You aim your phone in the direction of the spot and click. As the flash goes off, you think you see a woman's face right in front of you. Startled, you fall backward. You quickly turn on your flashlight and look around the room. It's empty. Inspect the dark spot.

You ignore the spot. It's just a dumb story your friend told you. Besides, looking for the generator is a much better use of your time. You find the generator on the far side of the basement. You flip the switch and pull the cord like your friend taught you, and the generator roars to life. As the basement lights flicker on, you think you see a figure of a woman by the stairs. You gasp and whip your head in that direction, but there's nothing’s there. _Just a trick of the light,_ you think. Ignore the dark spot.

You decide to take another photo. Once again, you turn your flashlight off and aim it toward the spot. You click, and the flash illuminates the room for just a second, but in that single second, you see the haunting face of a blood-soaked woman right in front of your own. Before you can even scream, the ghost grabs your face with its pale hands and opens its mouth wide, wider than any mouth should ever go. It pulls you inside, and everything goes dark. Your friend comes to the cabin the next day because they got their dates mixed up. Take another picture.

Nope, nope, nope! This is way too creepy for you. You run up the stairs and close the basement door behind you. You notice that your heart is beating really hard in your chest, and you laugh at yourself for letting your imagination get the best of you. But that's when you hear the sound of long nails scratching against the cabin windows. The End - Death

You try to let out a scream, but no sound comes out. As the figure of Bloody Mariah stares from behind the glass, you decide to hide so you pick the first door you find. It leads to a small, windowless bathroom. Hide.

_That's it. Things are getting too weird around here,_ you think. Before the demonic figure in the window can make another scratch with its nails, you're out the door and running back to your car. The trees are whirring past, some of the branches scratching at your face like claws, but you pay them no mind. You're focused on getting out of this place. Run. 

Tears begin to well up in your eyes, and you feel sobs start to escape from your mouth. As soon as a tear falls from your cheek onto the floor, the banging stops. From the other side of the door, your friend calls out. "Hey! I'm so, so sorry! This was all just a prank. C'mon, open the door!" Cry.

"Go away!" you scream, and in response, there's an inhuman scream from the other side of the door. Scream.

You stand and wipe the tears from your eyes. You can't believe that your friend would do this, but hey – at least a ghost isn't after you, right? You unlock the door and open it. "I'm so mad at yo–" you start, but your voice falters when you realize that you're not face to face with your friend at all. Open it.

You start running in that direction, but nothing is looking familiar now. You come to another fork in the path. You hesitate. 

Lost in Woods - 2 Before End

Again, you start to run without even thinking. After almost a half-hour of running, you look down and realize you're not even on a path anymore. You curse at yourself but then remember your keys. You take them out of your pocket and click the alarm on the fob in hopes that the horn will lead you back to civilization. But as you press the button, the sound of your car's alarm somehow comes from all around. –But... that's impossible,– you think. The End - Never Seen Again

You sit down in front of the board and use your hand to dust it off, revealing all the familiar letters and numbers. You don't see the harm in having a little fun while you wait for your friend. You don't really believe in this stuff anyway. You get started by laying your index and middle finger gently on the planchette. Almost immediately, the planchette begins to move on its own. Play with it.

Curiosity getting the best of you, you keep your fingers on the planchette. "Who is this?" you ask. Keep playing.

"Where are you right now?" you ask. The planchette moves. **B-E-H-I-N-D–Y-O-U.** That's when you feel something hot against the nape of your neck and the sound of ragged breath. Against your better judgement, you slowly turn around and find yourself nose to nose with the bloodied face of a dead woman, her skin rotting and peeling off in places. "Where are you right now?"

The planchette moves. **M-U-R-D-E-R-E-D.** "Murdered? Were you murdered?" The planchette moves to the upper-left hand corner of the board and circles yes. "By who? Who murdered you?" **T-U-R-N–O-F-F–T-H-E–L-I-G-H-T-S.** "Sorry, but I'm not doing that. I'm going to ask you again, Mariah. Who murdered you?" you ask.**D-O-N-T–T-R-U-S-T–T-H-E-M.** "Who?" **B-E-H-I-N-D–Y-O-U.** You turn expecting to see some sort of masked killer from a horror movie behind you, but instead, you find your friend standing there. "Oh my god, you scared me," you say.

"What are you trying to tell me?"

"You have no idea how happy I am to see you," you say. "I thought I was in a horror movie or something. The lights wouldn't turn on, and I couldn't find you, and then there was this board and it said... something about being murdered. I think someone was trying to tell me who killed them... I think they thought it was you. But that's impossible, right?" You begin to realize how silly your story sounds.

Tell them.

"Nothing. The lights wouldn't turn on so I started the generator," you say.

"You look scared to death," your friend says. ""The dark must have really gotten to you. Sorry I was late. I had to pick up a few things from the store. Look at you – you're shaking. Come upstairs, and I'll make you some tea."


Lie.

"Actually... Yes, I do." Your friend laughs, and the familiar sound calms you. What were you thinking? This is your life-long friend. They couldn't possibly have murdered anybody.

"The dark must have really gotten to you. Sorry I was late. I had to pick up a few things from the store. Look at you – you're shaking. Come upstairs, and I'll make you some tea," your friend says. 

"Actually... yes."

"I don't know. I'm not sure... A lot of weird things have been happening tonight. I think I should just go home and rest. We can do this again some other night," you say. 

"Sorry, but I can't let you do that," your friend says, locking the door behind them and then walking toward you.

"Stop playing around. I need to go," you say.

"Sorry, but you're not going anywhere," they say and pull a long kitchen knife from behind their back. The last thing you see is a swift glint of silver flash before your face and then everything goes dark around you.

"I don't know."

"No way," you say, but there's an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of your stomach.

"Come on. Let's get out of this basement. It gives me the creeps," your friend says, and you follow them upstairs to the living room. With the lights on, you notice that the cabin looks much more inviting as you and your friend sit down on the touch. You notice that your hands are still shaking, and your friend notices too. 

"Look at you – you're shaking. Would you like something to drink? I can make you some tea if you'd like."

"No way!"

"Yes, that would be amazing," you say, and your friend walks to the kitchen to get started on the tea. As you wait, you remember the Ouija board. How was that thing moving on its own? It's probably just some sort of prank board, right? 

"Here's your tea," your friend says, handing you a warm, steaming mug. 

"Thank you," you say and take a sup. It tastes slightly bitter, but the warmth calms your nerves. "So, how did you rig that Ouija Board to move on its own?"

"I didn't do anything," your friend says, but they sound distant as if they aren't sitting right next to you. In fact, you notice the edges of your vision starting to blur.

"But the board... it said not the trust... to t-t-tru–" You realize too late that your tea was poisoned, and the Ouija board was right to tell you to not trust your friend. Accept Tea Friend 1

"No thank you," you say. "I think I should just go home and rest. We can do this again some other night, ok?"

"Sorry, but I can't let you do that," your friend says, locking the door behind them.

"Stop messing around. I need to get out of here," you say, looking for a way out but coming up empty. They have to be kidding though... right? But if that's the case, why is your heart beating so quickly?

"You're not going anywhere," they say and pull a long kitchen knife out from behind them. Decline Tea Friend 1

"No thank you. I couldn't stomach anything right now," you say, and you see a funny look cross your friend's face. Was that... anger? Suddenly, your friend stands and starts to pace. 

"You just don't make anything easy, do you?" they ask, a sharp tone creeping into their voice. Your mouth opens to respond, but nothing comes out. From the far window, you suddenly hear a sharp noise – like nails on a chalkboard. You look and see a figure behind the window. She has long, black hair that falls past her shoulders, and her eyes are as white as death.

"You see! She won't stop haunting me for what I did!" your friend yells, and Blood Mariah begins to scratch harder at the window. 

"But then I had an idea. What if she's just lonely? What if I give her a friend to spend the rest of eternity with? Maybe then she'd leave me alone. But **you**... you can't do anything right. You were supposed to accept the tea, and then you'd meet your fate, but now it looks like I'm going to have to take care of you myself." Your friend pulls a long kitchen knife from behind their back and begins to creep toward you. You slowly start to back away, terrified. Out of the corner of your eye, you see the ghost of Bloody Mariah in the window and remember something. "Turn off the lights," she had spelled out on the Ouija board. But had that been advice or was she trying to trick you? Now you're backed against a wall with your friend getting closer and closer, the knife glinting. You notice a light switch close to your hand. 

Decline.

You decide to throw caution to the wind and turn off the lights like Bloody Mariah said to do. As soon as the lights in the cabin go off, you hear the sound of the window slam open.

"Hey, what's going on? Turn the lights back on–" your friend starts to say, but they go silent when they feel an icy hand grasp at their throat. In the dark, it's hard to make anything out, but you hear a ferocious, ghostly snarling and your friend's screams. By the sound of it, you're glad that the lights are off and you can't see the carnage. When your friend's screams finally quiet, you hear slow footsteps walking in your direction. For a moment, you think you may be next, but then you hear a ghostly whisper in your ear. Turn off the lights.

You ignore the light switch and watch as you friend gets so close, you can feel their breath on your face. "Sorry about this. It's nothing personal," they say and raise the knife high above their head. The last thing you see is a swift glint of silver flash before your face and then everything goes dark around you. The End - You Survived!

You open the chest and gasp. Inside is a porcelain doll worn ragged from years of neglect. It's clearly been a while since this thing had a child to love it. But despite all the grime and dust, you notice that the doll's eyes look eerily human and that there are little silver bells sewn onto her raggedy dress. But that's not all you find in the chest. There's also a black candle and – next to that – a single match. You look at your phone battery. It now says 1%. Open the chest.

You decide to take your chances in the dark and return downstairs. Sure, the dark sucks, but you were getting some pretty bad vibes from that chest.

"Hello," a voice says from the living room, and you nearly jump out of your skin when you see a shadowy figure a few feet away. But then you recognize the outline – it's your friend.

"Oh my god, where have you been? The lights won't turn on, and I've been seriously freaking out!"

"Sorry I'm so late. My head... hasn't felt right all evening," they say, and you notice something weird about their voice. It almost sounds... deeper than usual? The hairs on the back of your neck stand up, but you're not entirely sure why. Your friend takes a step closer, and a patch of moonlight coming in through the window illuminates their face. And their eyes... it's like they changed from their normal color to a strange yellow. And their teeth... Oh god, their teeth. Why are they so pointy?

Return downstairs. 

"What's wrong? You don't sound like yourself," you say.

"I haven't felt like myself since... well, since the last time we were here at the cabin together. What was that? About a month ago?" they ask.

"Something like that," you say. Your entire body feels like it's starting to shake. 

"Actually, it was exactly a month ago," they say. "I remember because that's when the last full moon was. That was when you changed and bit me. Ask what's wrong with your changing friend lol.

Before your friend can say another word, you're sprinting out the door and towards your car. Luckily, the full moon is so bright that it's lighting your path. Behind you, you hear your friend screaming in agony, and you almost turn around. But then the scream transforms into a howl, and you decide to keep running. You get to a fork in the path and can't exactly remember which way is the way back to the car. But you can't hesitate. Run from changing friend

"No!" you scream. With surprising speed, you find the door to the bathroom and lock yourself in. Your friend is scratching at the wood, trying to claw their way inside.

"This is all your fault!" they scream, but it sounds eerily like a howl. "Don't believe me? Just look in the mirror."

_This can't possibly be real,_ you think. But when you go to the mirror and look at your reflection, you gasp. Your eyes are a bright yellow, and your teeth have already started to turn into razor-sharp fangs. Deny it.

In that moment, it all comes flooding back to you – your terrible secret and the accident you had a month ago where you bit your friend. You can't stand it anymore... You have to get out of this cabin! And besides... you feel the change starting to take over.

You burst through the cabin door with an inhuman leap, and when you hit the ground, you're on all fours instead of on two legs. Now you're running faster than any human could, and the woods have come alive around you. You get to a small clearing and raise your fanged mouth to the sky. The moon looks back at you, full and bright. You let out a long, piercing howl, and that's when you smell something... It smells an awful lot like people. The End - You're a Werewolf

You decide to go right. As you're running along the path, the creature behind you is gaining quickly. It's too fast. There's no outrunning it. You only have two options. 

You take the left path and keep running with everything you've got. After what seems like a mile, you finally find your car and manage to climb inside. Through the windshield, you see the creature burst through a line of trees and stand in front of the car. It's on its hind legs yet its face looks almost like a wolf. For a moment, you wonder what this awful creature could possibly be, but with the full moon high overhead, you think you have a pretty good idea – werewolf. There's no time for thinking so you keep running straight ahead, ignoring the two paths on either side of you. Now you're completely surrounded by trees, and whatever's chasing after you is quickly closing in. You realize that running is futile. There are only two options.

Ignore the path.

You grab your baseball bat and step outside of the car. You're not sure if you can fight the werewolf off, but you're definitely going to try. It lunges at you, and you swing the with everything you've got. The werewolf catches the bat midair with its large claws and snaps the bat in half. You turn to get back into the car, but you realize you've locked the keys inside. You try to run away into the woods, but you fall. In an attempt to hide, you take cover behind a tree. Covering your mouth with your hand, you hope that the thing won't be able to hear your breathing.

The beast is so close now, you can hear it growling and sniffing on the other side of the tree. It's too late by the time you realize it can smell you. The werewolf begins to circle the tree a couple times and then stops in front of you, revealing its razor-sharp teeth in a snarl. In a way, the wolf creature looks familiar. But it can't possibly be... It lunges and starts to tear into you. Fight.

You quickly lock all the doors and get the car running. With the headlights on the creature, it only looks more frightening and inhuman. It lets out a gigantic roar, and you think, _I've got to get out of here._ You hit the gas pedal with the intention of backing out of the parking spot, but the car lurches forward. You accidentally put the vehicle in drive instead of reverse! For just a moment, the werewolf looks like a deer in headlights, and then you hear a crunch as you run over its foot. It roars in agony, and you throw the car into reverse (for real this time). You back out of the spot and start to drive away, leaving the werewolf howling in your wake. You drive all the way home.

"I thought you were going to your friend's cabin," you mother says when you enter the house. 

"Had to cancel," you say, knowing that she'd never believe you in a million years. That night, you sleep better than you've ever slept before. You sleep so hard that it takes your mom several attempts to wake you.

"Hey, sleepy head. Get up," she says. You open your eyes and sit up in bed. 

"What's going on?" you ask.

"Your friend came by to apologize about last night," she says and points to your doorway. Your friend is standing there with an apologetic smile on their face, but your blood runs cold when you see what's on their leg. Drive away.

The End - Friend's a Werewolf Survival

You decide to take cover behind a tree and hide from the creature. Covering your mouth with your hand, you hope that the thing won't be able to hear your breathing. You find a large branch on the ground and pick it up, wielding it like a sword. You hear the beast getting closer and closer. It burst through a line of trees and stands before you, almost two or three feet taller than you. It's on its hind legs yet its face looks almost like a wolf. You wonder what this awful creature could possibly be, but with the full moon high overhead, you think you have a pretty good idea – werewolf. It lunges at you, and you swing your branch with everything you've got. To your surprise, the branch actually hits the creature in its eye, piercing the skin. The werewolf yelps and claws at the hole where its eye used to be. With its tail tucked between its legs, it runs off whimpering. You look at the end of your branch and see the werewolf's eye still clinging to the end, and the sight makes you faint. When you wake up, it's morning, and there are birds singing sweetly in the trees. _Oh my god... what a nightmare,_ you think. But if it was just a nightmare, how did you end up in the forest? Maybe you had been sleeping walking. Yes, that has to be it. 

After dusting yourself off, you walk through the forest and come across your friend's cabin. You let yourself in, and your friend is in the kitchen cooking breakfast.

"Where were you last night? I was worried about you," they say, their back turned as they flip something on the stove.

"You're not going to believe this, but I had the strangest dream–" you start, but then your friend turns around, and you see that they have an eyepatch on. On their plate is a raw piece of steak, all red and juicy. Your friend smiles, and their teeth look just a little bit too sharp. 

"It's ok. No hard feelings," they say. "And you don't have to be afraid. At least not right now. The next full moon isn't for another month."

Wake up.

You close the chest and exit the attic. Sure, the dark sucks, but you got some seriously bad vibes from that chest and its contents. Besides, dolls really freak you out and is the tiny light of a candle really worth it? _No way,_ you think. 

"Hello," a voice says from the living room, and you nearly jump out of your skin when you see a shadowy figure a few feet away. But then you recognize the outline – it's your friend.

"Oh my god, where have you been? The lights won't turn on, and I've been seriously freaking out!"

"Sorry I'm so late. My head... hasn't felt right all evening," they say, and you notice something weird about their voice. It almost sounds... deeper than usual? The hairs on the back of your neck stand up, but you're not entirely sure why. Your friend takes a step closer, and a patch of moonlight coming in through the window illuminates their face. And their eyes... it's like they changed from their normal color to a strange yellow. And their teeth... Oh god, their teeth. Close the chest and return downstairs.

There's no way you're going to let yourself get stuck in the dark with no light source. Before you reach for the candle and match, you decide to flip the doll over onto its stomach so you can't see its eyes staring blankly at you. Satisfied, you ignite the match with your thumb and light the candle. As you light it, your phone dies and the flashlight cuts out. You breathe a sigh of relief. _Just in the nick of time,_ you think. You turn to exit the attic, but that's when you notice the writing on the wall. It looks as if someone took a knife and carved "DON'T LIGHT THE CANDLE. SHE'LL WAKE UP" into the wood. Light the candle.

You decide to blow out the candle, and for a moment, you're swallowed by the darkness of the attic. But then, to your horror, the candle flickers back to life. You try and try again to extinguish the flame, but it keeps lighting. 

From behind you, you hear the high-pitched sound of a child's giggle, the jingle of bells, and tiny footsteps made by little porcelain feet. You're about to turn toward the footsteps when you see more writing etched into the wall. "DON'T LOOK" it reads. Immediately, you crumble into a ball and back yourself into a corner of the attic, keeping your eyes shut tight. Blow out the candle.

You slowly turn toward the chest, but from where you're standing, you can't see inside. You step closer and take a peek only to have your worst fears confirmed – the doll is gone. From behind you, you hear the high-pitched sound of a child's giggle, the jingle of bells, and tiny footsteps made by little porcelain feet. You're about to turn toward the footsteps when you see more writing etched into the wall. "DON'T LOOK" it reads. Immediately, you crumble into a ball and back yourself into a corner of the attic, keeping your eyes shut tight. Turn to look at the doll. 

You can't resist the urge to look so you open your eyes. Standing before you, no bigger than a foot tall, is the doll from the chest, only now there's something more evil and twisted about her face. Open your eyes FIRST

Despite the temptation to look, you keep your eyes shut tight. That's when the doll starts to whisper in your ear terrible things that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. It knows all of your worst fears and is sparing no details. Keep your eyes shut  FIRST

"No!" you scream, refusing to open your eyes. This nightmare continues for hours upon hours, and the doll's voice never stops whispering those terrible things. Yet you stay strong, and somehow make it until morning. As the sun rises, the doll's voice begins to fade until you can't hear anything anymore. After you're sure the doll is gone, you open your eyes and see it laying on its back, staring at the ceiling with a blank expression. It's just a doll again. You immediately escape from the attic and find your friend in the kitchen.

"Where have you been?!" they ask, and you tell them everything that happened last night. "You must have fallen asleep and had a realistic nightmare," they say, and you realize no one will believe you. But that's ok because it's all over. Despite your plans to stay at the cabin for the weekend, you apologize to your friend and go home early.

Once you're home, you immediately jump into bed. You've never been so happy to be back in your room in your whole life. In fact, you stay in your bed all day long and as the sun's coming down, you only snuggle further into the covers. Just as you're about to fall asleep, you hear something in the corner of your room – almost like the sound of jingle bells and little porcelain feet hitting the floor. You sit up in bed, your heart pounding. _This can't be real, right?_ you think, but you hear the bells again, only closer now. You're not sure how, but the doll has found you. You hide under the covers, and that's when you feel the doll right on the other side of the blanket, once again whispering those horrible, horrible things. "Just look," the doll says. Keep them shut. 

Despite the doll's best efforts, you don't look, but the temptation is horrible. You just need the doll's awful words to be over, but if you look, you know it will mean certain death. "That's ok," the doll says with its evil, childish voice. "Don't look. I'll just keep coming back night after night after night. And maybe you won't look tonight or tomorrow night. Maybe not even a month from now or even years. But one day, I'll wear you down, and you'll look. And then... on that glorious night... You start to walk in the direction of the pink cabin. You climb the porch steps and knock on the door. A sweet, old lady in a nightgown answers the door. 

"Hello there," she says. "Why, you look frightened half to death. Are you ok?"

"Hi. I seem to be a little lost. I was looking for my friend's cabin, and I got turned around, and now my phone doesn't have any service. Do you think I could use your phone?"

"I'm sorry, but I don't have a phone. But I probably have an old map somewhere. I can make some tea for you to enjoy while I look if you'd like." You look at the other cabin. _Maybe they have a phone,_ you think. On the other hand, tea does sound nice...

Go to the pink cabin.

"Tea would be amazing," you say, and she leads you through the house and into her living room where a warm fire is burning in the fireplace.

"Please, make yourself at home," she says. "I'll be right back with that tea." The old lady leaves you alone, and you look around the room as you wait for her to return. On the wall, you see two photos. One is a black and white picture of a young boy, and the other is of the old lady but when she was much younger. In the photo, she's in an old-fashioned nurse uniform. Then you notice an empty terrarium in the corner of the room. Inside it, there's some dirt and a branch, but it's otherwise empty from what you can see. Before you can get up to take a closer peek, the old lady returns with your tea.

"Thank you," you say and take a long sip. It instantly warms you up, and the fear you felt from the woods dissipates. The old lady sits in a rocking chair across from you and smiles, but there's an awkward silence. Accept.

"I'm so sorry, but no. I really need to get in contact with my friend," you say and start to walk away.

"I'd be careful if I were you," the old lady says, looking up at the night sky. "It's a full moon. And those woods... well, you'd better watch out. One day, many years ago, my son went into those woods at night, and he never came back."

"I'll be fine. Thanks." You walk away and hear the old woman lock the door behind you. You shudder as you replay her words in your head. Looking up, you see that she was right. It is a full moon. You decide to knock on the door of the older cabin. There's no answer so you decide to knock one more time. From the other side of the door, you hear the sound of footsteps and a heavy sigh. An old man in a worn-down flannel answers the door.

"What do you want?" he asks.

"I... um, I was hoping I could use your landline."

OLDER CABIN

You leave the two cabins behind you and head back into the woods in search of your friend's cabin. All you want is to find it and hang out with your buddy. Is that too much to ask? You come across a fork in the road, and you think it looks pretty familiar. You...

Search for your friend's cabin.

"Is that your son?" you ask, gesturing to the picture on the wall. She smiles, but there's a sadness in her eyes.

"Yes, that was my boy. Sadly, he drowned in a lake when he was only a boy. Not too far from here actually," she says.

"Oh... I'm so sorry for your loss," you say, and as the words leave your mouth, you notice the edges of your vision starting to blur. At first, you think you might be getting tired, but then your head starts to spin. _Something's not right,_ you think.

"Yes, I'm sorry too. But you don't need to be. In fact, you’re doing me and my son a great service. He’s been so lonely all these years, and you’re... well, you're going to keep him company," she says. You try to make a run for it but only manage to make it a few steps before falling onto the floor. Succumb to sleep.

You wake up to the sound of running water and crickets chirping. You're laying on your back and feel something cold and heavy wrapped around you. You look down at your body and see that you've been wrapped in a set of heavy, rusted chains. You try to speak but your mouth has been covered with tape. With surprising strength, the old lady is pulling you across a dock toward the water. At the edge of the dock, she looks down at you and smiles.

"Please tell my son I said hello," she says and then pushes you into the water. As you sink into the depths of the lake, the bottom starts to come into focus, and you see something that makes your blood run even colder than the water you're in. It's the submerged skeleton of a young child – the old lady's son. And it looks like the two of you are going to be spending a lot of time together. You wake up to a strange sound. It's almost as if it's raining but... heavier. You know you're in some kind of box though. Despite your throbbing head and limited movement, you slide your hand into your pocket and grab your phone. When you turn on the flashlight, you let out a scream. Beside you, there's the skeleton of what looks like a child that's been in the box for many, many years. And that's when you realize – you're in a coffin! And that sound? Well, it's the old lady shoveling dirt on top of you, burying you alive. 

From above, you can hear her muffled voice saying, "Now my son won't won't be lonely! You two are going to be the best of friends!" As she shovels more and more dirt on top of the coffin, her voice grows distant until finally you can't hear her at all. You look at your phone, hoping that you can call for help, but six feet under, the service is nonexistent. And to make matters worse, the battery is at 1%. You stare at the skeleton of your new friend, and as you're staring into the two vacant holes where his eyes used to be, the flashlight goes out. That's when you hear a voice.

"Don't worry," the voice of a small boy says. "It's not so bad. After a while, you get used to the worms."

Wake up. 

"I'm sorry to hear that," you say and hope that you didn't bring up a sore subject. 

"It's ok," she says. "I still find ways to keep up the old work." As she speaks, your head starts to swim a bit, and the edges of your vision start to blur. _Maybe I'm just hungry,_ you think.

"Oh, yeah? What work?" you ask, shaking away the weird feeling in your head. But that doesn't help. In fact, your head starts to feel worse. And... heavy somehow. 

"Oh, I love to work with the human body," the old lady says, smiling wider until you can see every single one of her yellow teeth. "Unfortunately, the hospital didn’t see my work for the art it was, and they fired me."

"The human body?" you echo, but your voice sounds far away and sluggish. You look down into your cup and see the remnants of some fine powder at the bottom of your cup, and you don't think its sugar. The room starts to slip away as you realize you've been drugged, and the cup falls from your hands, shattering into pieces.

"But you'll understand my art, won't you? You'll be newest subject!" the old lady asks, still rocking in her chair with that wicked grin.


"I'm sorry to hear that."

"Accident?" you ask, your curiosity getting the best of you.

"Well... not so much of an accident as an incident. I was fired, you see. Some claims of malpractice."

"But they weren't true... were they?" you ask, and as the words leave your mouth, your vision begins to blur around the edges. The old lady's paper-thin lips stretch into a wicked smile, and she lets out a laugh that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. You look down at the bottom of your cup and see residue from some powder that you're pretty sure isn't sugar from the way your head is spinning. 

"Oh, they were true alright. I make sure they can never, ever run away from me again." She steps toward you and places the saw blade right above your kneecap. You try to scream for help, but she's placed tape over your mouth. "Shhh, don't worry," she says sweetly. "I'll make it all better." "Are you ready to get started?" the old lady asks, holding up the needle. "You know why they fired me? Because I loved giving people shots. Just the thought of it gives me goosebumps, even now. "Are you ready to get started?" the old lady asks, holding up the needle. "You know why they fired me? Because I loved giving people shots. All sorts of shots with **razor-sharp** needles – the sharper and longer, the better! Just the thought of it gives me goosebumps, even now. "Sure, ok," you say. You're a little uncertain, but now your curiosity is piqued. She leads you to a door down the hall. When she opens it, you see a set of stairs leading down to a dark basement.

"Sure."

"Actually, no thanks... I should probably be going. I'm sure my friend is worried about me. I was supposed to get to their place hours ago," you say.

"Well, that's perfectly ok. The tea should kick in any second," the old lady says, her friendly face falling into a haunting glare. 

"Wait... what do you mean?" you ask, but that's when you notice the edges of your vision starting to blur. As the room starts to spin, you feel panic set in. She's poisoned you! 

"No thanks."

You start to make your way down the stairs into the darkness. The stairs creak underneath your feet, and you notice an odd smell that you can't quite place. As you get to the bottom of the staircase, you turn to the lady who's following behind you.

As soon as your eyes meet, you can tell something is wrong. She hits a switch on the wall, and a metal door comes crashing down between you and the stairs. The lights flicker on, illuminating the basement and revealing it for what it truly is – a cage. 

"What are you doing? Let me out. Stop playing around," you say, banging your firsts against the bars. 

"I tried all the usual pets... fish, dogs, cats. But none of them really brought me any satisfaction. I couldn't keep any of them alive, you see. But you… I’m going to take very, very good care of you. Forever and ever and ever," she says smiling. Walk down the stairs.

"Um... I actually think I should be going. I'm sure my friend's wondering where I am," you say. But as you start to turn around, you feel a hard push from behind and go tumbling down the staircase into the dark. Luckily, when you hit the basement floor, the ground isn’t hard. In fact, it feels soft and almost like... it’s moving? From the top of the staircase, the lady turns the lights on, and you can see why the floor feels like it's moving – the entire basement is filled with thousands upon thousands of snakes.

“These are my babies!” the old woman says. "I started with just one in that empty terrarium you saw, but I couldn't get enough! The one draw back to having so many snakes is... well, they get awfully hungry!" Change your mind.

When you wake up, you're in complete darkness, and your legs feel as if they're bound in tape or something sticky. You look around and can barely make out a set of stairs that lead up to an open door where the old lady is standing. "You're a runner, I see," the old lady says. "No matter. She likes to start with the legs anyway."

Before you can ask her what she means, she hits a switch, and the basement lights turn on, allowing you to see what the strange sensation on your legs **really** is. To your horror, you see that a gigantic snake that nearly fills the entire room has started to consume you. Already, its mouth is almost up to the top of your thighs and swallowing you more and more by the second. When you wake up, you find yourself in a dark room with metal bars all around. The old woman is on the other side of the bars, watching you. You decide to ask her...

"Why are you doing this? Why are you keeping me in this cage?" you ask.

"The cage isn't to keep you in, my dear. It's to keep **him** from getting out," she says and points just over your shoulder. "He gets awfully hungry, you see."

You turn slowly and hear the sound of something large and terrifying skulking in the darkness. Then you gasp as some kind of monstrous creature with glowing red eyes and razor-sharp teeth crawls out of the shadows, licking its lips with a black tongue that's dripping with spit.

"What is that thing?!" you ask as it lunges toward you, a deep growl rumbling from its snarling mouth. "Why are you doing this?"

"Where am I?" you ask. You notice a strange scuttling sound coming from all around.

"The basement," the old lady says. "It all started with that terrarium, you see. I had two babies in there at first, but they kept multiplying and multiplying. But then my babies grew too big for that little old terrarium so I had to find them a new home. And the basement... well, let's just say that they're absolutely thriving down here."

At that moment, the old lady switches on the lights, and – to your horror – you discover the source of the scuttling sound. All around you, from floor to ceiling, are giant spiders. You open your mouth to scream, but the spiders are fast. "Where am I?"

"Please let me come in. Just for a moment. I'm really freaked out," you say. The old man sighs and opens his door for you to enter.

"Fine, suit yourself. C'mon in. But whatever you do... don't look up," he says, and you follow him into his home. Inside, you see from the corner of your eyes that everything is in shambles, but you do as the man said, and keep your eyes on the floor. You fight the urge to peek. _What could possibly be up there that he doesn't want me to see?_ you think. The old man leads you to a table covered in dirty dishes and gestures for you to sit.

"Do you think I could have a glass of water?" you ask after noticing how dry your mouth is.

"Please let me come in."

"Sorry for bother you," you say. As you step off the porch, you can still feel his eyes on you. 

"Hey kid," the old man says, looking at you and then up at the sky. "It's a full moon tonight. I'd stick to the path if I were you. It's not safe 'round these parts this time of month." And with that, he closes the door and locks it behind him. You look up and see that he's correct – the moon is full. But it's just the moon. It can't hurt you, right? But if that's the case, then why is it making you so nervous...?

_Forget this place,_ you think and decide to walk back to your car. As you're searching blindly through the woods, you hear a howl, and it sounds alarmingly close. You pick up the pace and hope that it's just a fox or coyote, but by the sound of it, that doesn't seem likely. It sounds... big. Suddenly, there's a bad feeling in the pit of your stomach, and you freeze. You look down at your feet and see that the path has vanished. You must have accidentally wandered off of it while you were in a hurry. And now there's something really big running through the trees, and it sounds like it's fast and coming right toward you. "Sorry for bothering you."

"Please? I'm begging you. I'm dehydrated," you say.

With another sigh, the old man stands and says, "Fine. But like I said, don't go looking up while I'm gone, or you'll regret it." He disappears into the kitchen, and you're left all by yourself. You feel your eyes begin to drift upward, but you stop yourself. Unless...

"Please?"
