This "Friends" Detail Explains Ross And Rachel's Terrible Relationship

It was seven years of bad luck! H/T to Redditor Smoothmotives.

If you're a Friends fan, you probably know that Ross and Rachel's relationship was...kind of a disaster 95% of the time.

Well, thanks to Redditor Smoothmotives, we might finally have an explanation as to why.

The first time we see Ross, in the pilot episode of the show, he's just come in from the rain and he's holding an umbrella.

Shortly after, Rachel comes running in wearing her wedding dress.

But here's the moment where it all starts: Rachel goes to say hi to Ross, but he accidentally opens his umbrella.

As we all know, opening an umbrella indoors is traditionally thought to bring bad luck, right? So what if Ross cursed himself — and his relationship with Rachel — right then?

Smoothmotives theorizes that the umbrella incident started a seven-year streak of bad luck (it's always seven years, right?) that ends when Rachel tells Ross that she's pregnant with his child.

And that makes perfect sense, because those episodes aired almost EXACTLY seven years apart!

So, all of this begs the question: If Ross had let Phoebe continue to cleanse his aura, could he have avoided the bad luck and gotten together with Rachel much earlier, without all the muss and fuss? PROBABLY, IDK.

Who knows? Maybe a little aura cleansing would've also made Ross suck a little less.
