11 Anime Series That Are Actually Funny

They're not just like, "Oops, we both fell and now I'm accidentally grabbing your boob" funny.

1. Gintama

The setting of Gintama is kinda funny on its own (it's Edo-period Japan, but with big cities and advanced technology thanks to invading aliens), but it's the show's full-on commitment to each gag and the occasional fourth wall break that really makes it one of the funniest anime of all time.

2. One-Punch Man

A single screenshot from One-Punch Man doesn't do it justice. You have to get to know the protagonist, Saitama, and his insanely overpowered abilities in order to see why his nonchalant approach to pretty much everything is so funny.

3. Kill la Kill

If you can't abide by fan service, then you're going to have trouble with this show. But if you don't mind it (and you can take solace in the fact that the nudity here is fairly equal-opportunity), Kill la Kill has some truly funny sequences. The show's increasingly over-the-top action also plays off a lot of popular anime tropes, so those who have watched a lot of anime before will get an extra kick out of it.

4. Excel Saga

Excel Saga is a strange, strange show that feels more like a collection of gags. But that makes for some funny stuff, as long as you're not too concerned with, you know, a coherent plot. For example, our heroine (who is very excited about her temp job working for a villain bent on global domination) is sent out in the first episode to assassinate the show's creator.

5. The Devil Is A Part-Timer

The humor in this show is pretty much all about the premise: The devil (yep, Satan himself) and his top lieutenant are expelled from their mystical realm and land in modern-day Tokyo, where they must work part-time jobs to get by. Their ambitions to rule all humans aren't extinguished, though, and they see fast-food management opportunities as a stepping stone to world domination.

6. Mob Psycho 100

If you like One-Punch Man, you'll likely enjoy this series about psychics who purge evil spirits. The sense of humor is similar: Somehow, it's wacky and dry at the same time.

7. KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!

Konosuba is an unabashed mini-harem anime with tons of fan service and dirty jokes, but it's so funny in other ways that even the fan-service-averse will probably enjoy it. A loser living in Japan dies in a car accident and is reincarnated in a world that is essentially an RPG video game come to life. You'd think he would excel there, but his party members (including a mage who can only cast one spell before fainting, and a knight with a masochistic kink) leave him constantly in debt, when he's not accidentally fighting some high-level demon king. My personal favorite running gag plays off of how characters in anime always yell out each others' names...you'll know it when you see it.

8. FLCL

If you've never watched this classic, now's a good time to start: Adult Swim has just started airing new episodes, almost 15 years after the first season premiered. It's tough to sum up what the show is about, but at its core it's a coming-of-age story that happens to include aliens and robots and stuff.

9. Trigun

Trigun starts out as a fun action-comedy, but watch out because it gets HEAVY sometimes. The show — and the protagonist, Vash — has a knack for giving you a serious, dramatic moment and then immediately breaking the tension with a laugh line or gag. That yo-yo can be weird at times, but you'll fall in love with Vash's antics from the get-go.

10. Kiss Him, Not Me

If you've ever "shipped" fictional characters (or real people) before, you'll identify with Kae Serinuma. She starts getting attention from boys at school, but the problem is (thanks to her love of yaoi anime) she'd much rather have them date each other. Hijinks ensue, naturally.

11. Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto

Most of the humor in this show, at least toward the beginning, centers around one premise: that first-year student Sakamoto is effortlessly cool and can do absolutely no wrong. School bullies try to prank him by stealing his desk, so he sits casually at the window, looking like something out of a fashion magazine. He cleans the classroom and manages to dodge in between each dust mote, maintaining his flawless look. It's a simple gag, but one that can be mined for a surprising amount of laughs.
