    1. An adaptive foam mattress that's the perfect medium between soft and firm. If you want the safety of a name brand but can't justify breaking the bank for a mattress, Tuft and Needle has you covered with their budget alternative.

Reviewers say it's perfect if you loved Tuft and Needle's Original Mattress but are looking for a slightly less firm (and much more affordable) option.

Promising review: "Love love love this mattress. I know T&N markets this mattress as a good use for kids or a guest room, but I completely disagree. I bought this mattress because I assumed it would be a similar quality to the original, and at 250 dollars cheaper, I figured it would be worth the try. I have felt the original before, and to me, it feels almost exactly the same, with the Nod maybe being a touch softer (more to my liking). It feels super supportive, and I have slept great and woken up without any soreness or stiffness since I got it. I cannot feel the motion from anyone else in the bed which is a huge added bonus. Save yourself some money and try this mattress instead!" —Lauren Demarchi

    2. A cooling memory foam mattress infused with green tea gel for sweaty sleepers who just can't seem to get comfortable, no matter how many times you turn over.

This mattress, along with its conventional memory foam counterpart, are the top-selling mattresses on Amazon!

Many reviewers caution against opening the mattress cover itself, which could expose you to fiberglass. Most budget mattresses contain a layer of fiberglass that acts as a fire retardant, and unless otherwise stated, that's the case with the mattresses on this list. We've found some fiberglass-free alternatives (see #7 and 12), but make sure to research the manufacturer and instructions from reviewers if you have concerns.

Promising review: "Had no idea of how much sleep and relaxation I had been missing out on all of this time. I definitely had no idea that you could purchase things like this from Amazon. I received it in two days as promised and boy has my life changed. I had no idea how comfortable these mattresses were. Honey my body had been crying for this for a while and I totally ignored it. I had no idea that the soft springy mattresses were the reason that I had been waking up on some mornings feeling like crap with the bones in my back, hips and neck hurting and feeling like I had been in a street fight during my sleep. Well I guess the other types of mattresses I had been sleeping on were so soft that they were allowing my body to fold and bend up like a pretzel or a chicken wing, and then when I would wake up in the mornings and attempt to dash right out of bed like I was still in my twenties, my body just would laugh at me like, REALLY???? The past two weeks I have been sleeping on this mattress and I have slept like I haven't slept in years, I actually overslept for two mornings and was running late to work and had to call my job and say that I was caught up in traffic, yeah I was caught up all right, but it wasn't the traffic, it was that darn, freakin, awesomely comfortable mattress, SMH........ Thanks Amazon for making me a happy well rested woman." — malibu

    3. A hypoallergenic mattress that's the comfiest out of all the mattresses I've owned and is perfect for my allergies.

Ashley Homestore, Allison Jiang / Buzzfeed

I have this mattress in my room at home, and I love it. As someone whose back is already wrecked at the ripe old age of 23, I definitely need a firm mattress. This one doesn't sag or cave like other mattresses do, and I've never had an issue waking up with back pain. For the value, I'd say that it's one of the best cheap mattresses in a box that you're liable to find; I've definitely slept on pricier mattresses and had a much worse night. I also prefer a tall mattress, so I'm thankful that it's 12 inches! I actually had no idea it was hypoallergenic until I looked it up and read the details, but that definitely explains why I'm able to bury my face in it and not have a sneezing fit in the spring, which I'm extremely prone to.

Promising review: "So I’m a broke-ish twentysomething, just moved into a new house and needed a new bed without spending thousands of $$. I found this mattress and had been wanting to switch from a traditional mattress and box spring to a memory foam mattress. I couldn’t believe how cheap this was. I bought a queen size, it came vacuum sealed in a box which was awesome because it was so easy to move. It puffed up almost immediately after taking the plastic off and didn’t have a weird smell which is common with memory foams. This bed is seriously the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in. It’s firm but gives easily to whatever position you’re laying in. When my boyfriend rolls over I can’t feel any movement and I don’t feel like I’m roasting next to his body heat. This past week has been the best sleep I’ve ever gotten, I can’t believe I only paid a few hundred for this thing. If you like your memory foam a little firmer, this bed will blow you away. Can’t say enough good things." —meb95

Promising review: "I got this mattress for our guest room. I've slept on it a few times now (I struggle with insomnia, so I will sneak out of the bedroom to read so as to not disturb my partner), and I find it VERY comfortable. I honestly like this mattress more than the $1500 one in our master bedroom. I find it to be a true medium-firm: very supportive with just enough sink to cradle my lower back. I sleep both on my back and my side, and I have not experienced any more shoulder or hip pain from this mattress than from the plush mattress in our master bedroom. In fact, I think I experience LESS. I've never slept on it with my partner, though, so I am not sure how adding another person on the mattress might change the feel (the old 'sink and roll' effect). The edge support is only so-so, which is part of what gives me pause on that." —WizBangWow!

    8. A gel foam mattress with a bamboo fabric cover destined to keep you cool even when it feels like your sweat glands are trying to sabotage you in your sleep.

Promising review: "I just knew I had messed up buying a mattress off the Internet. Especially one that was all foam — I've only had spring with a memory foam topper for the past ten years. Within the first seconds of it being opened I was expecting an odor as the only bad reviews have mentioned, but I didn't smell anything. Then I buried my face and inhaled, I could *barely* smell an odor. It has since gone away. Three restless nights in my boyfriend said is it just me or is this too firm, and he was right. We kept sleeping on it, waking up in no pain for once. After a week we're asking ourselves if the mattress has gotten softer or if we're just used to it. I personally think it's gotten softer, hoping it's not gonna be worn down in a short period of time (there's no signs of that so far). But the thing is, I'VE COMPLETELY STOPPED SNORING. He informed me I used to saw logs at night and he said I haven't snored once since we've had this mattress." — Amy K

    9. Another memory foam and innerspring hybrid mattress with a beautiful quilted floral design.

Promising review: "Excellent bed, probably the best I have owned. Showed up on time and relatively easy to 'assemble.' Probably user error, but the mattress unrolled upside down and had to be flipped over. It's VERY heavy. Once I got it set up, however, it was inflated almost immediately and has a very soft top with a pretty firm core. Excellent support. Wouldn't recommend this for someone looking for an especially soft bed. I still cannot believe we got a bed of this quality for this price. We've had it about two months now and still love it." —Amazon Customer

You've probably seen ads for this startup pretty much everywhere, but this mattress's solid five-star rating seems to indicate that it lives up to the hype.

Promising review: "I purchased the Essential mattress because my old one had a huge canyon in it, my back pain was unbelievable. At 27 years old I was on multiple anti-inflammatory medications, a muscle relaxer and three different pain medications. After less than a month on this mattress I'm down to the muscle relaxer maybe once a week and one anti inflammatory medication. I went from struggling to sleep more than two hours continuously on my old mattress, even when it was brand new. I get on average seven hours now when I used to get three or four. My mood has improved, my patience has increased and I just feel better overall." — Kevin Rieker

    11. A high-density foam mattress perfect for you if who can't decide if you want a soft bed or one that supports your back — who says you can't have both?

Promising review: "This is the best mattress I've ever slept on, period. I love going to bed! Nicely firm but still enough give with the multiple layers of foam that it contours and cradles your body without sagging. My partner and I have been sleeping on it for five years now and it still supports us as comfortably as when we first bought it, no soft spots or divots. It doesn't get too hot in the summer like a lot of foam mattresses, it still breathes and doesn't suffocate your skin. The multiple layers of different density foam act as a deep motion absorber so when one of us is shifting or even getting up the other isn't disturbed at all. You forget you're even sleeping in the same bed as someone else! I hate soft mattresses and this is my dream of a firm mattress that you can sleep on in any position and still feel comfortable. It's firm in a gradual way that still contours to your body but doesn't sag or leave your joints in pain. A great compromise mattress for people who like different degrees of softness, this one has a wonderful range that leaves my partner and I both well rested and happy." —Chris S

    12. A hybrid mattress with no fiberglass to put your mind at ease AND let you drift off to sleep with no pain whatsoever.

Promising review: "I never write reviews. Ever. But I want this company to succeed because this mattress is seriously amazing. I don’t know that I would feel this strongly about it if it cost what its counterparts cost. I paid less than $400 for a mattress that I would have willingly bought for $1600. The quality is excellent. We’ve been sleeping on it for a few weeks and I love it the same every night as I did the first night. It is FIRM. If you are a side sleeper this is probably not the mattress for you but if you are a tummy or back sleeper and looking for a super firm mattress, give this one a try." —Ani Whid
