17 Movie Fan Theories That Are So Darn Good, People Wish They Were Actually True

    We recently asked members of our BuzzFeed Community, "What's a movie fan theory so good/cool/well thought out, you actually WISH it were true?" and, WHEW BUDDY, they did not disappoint. So, with that in mind, here are just a few of the fan-favorite fan theories shared:

    Also, WARNING: There are some SPOILERS ahead for several of these films, so please proceed with caution!

    1. The Dursleys were mean to Harry because he was a Horcrux in the Harry Potter universe.

    "(This isn't my theory, and I can't remember where I saw it — but full credit to the theorist!) Essentially, the theory posits that the reason the Dursleys were so awful to Harry was because he was one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, which specifically aim to cause chaos and negativity in their surroundings."

    2. Peter Parker is worthy of wielding Mjölnir in Avengers: Endgame.

    "I could think of a million answers for this, but this one's my favorite theory:

    If you haven’t seen Avengers: Age Of Ultron in a while, you might forget the smaller details of the movie. One of my favorite funny moments is when Quicksilver sees Thor’s hammer flying past him, then tries to grab onto it, but the hammer falls as soon as he touches it and takes him with it. HOWEVER, in Avengers: Endgame, Captain America tosses the hammer and calls out to Peter Parker, who then uses a web to grab onto the hammer and it flies through the air. Because the hammer never dropped, I think this implies that Peter Parker is a genuinely pure soul who is worthy of wielding the power of Thor."

    3. Also, Mary Jane betrayed Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse.

    "There was a theory that said M.J. betrayed Spider-Man. Basically, it’s because she wasn’t helping Miles like Aunt May did, and she was too calm being around Kingpin after he killed Peter. Then, there’s the part where Peter tells Miles to 'be careful who he trusts' before he dies."

    4. The plot of The Corpse Bride is actually Victor's wedding eve nightmare.

    "The entire plot is actually Victor's nightmare from the night before he meets Victoria, because he's nervous about getting married. Victor has this image in his head of the woman he wants to marry, and she came to life in his nightmare as Emily. She's free and beautiful — things he is not — kind of like the butterfly that's been sitting in the glass on his window sill. So, when he wakes up, he sets it free, like he did to Emily in his nightmare."

    5. Nina's overprotective mother in Black Swan wasn't real.

    "I think Nina's creepy mom is a figment of her imagination that represents her childish, virginal side. Her mom was never in any scenes with other people until the very end (and the scene with Mila Kunis, which ended up being a drug dream)."

    "It's a classic one, but I always liked that theory. The otherworldly glow that emanated from the case, the Band-Aid on the back of his neck (from where his soul was taken), how valuable the case is to him...it all fits!"

    "And the contents of Marsellus Wallace's briefcase was actually one of the Infinity Stones. It’s pretty tenuous, and the only 'real' evidence is the Ezekiel 25:17 verse being on Nick Fury’s headstone, but it’s still one of my favorites!"

    8. The parents of Lilo and Nani from Lilo and Stitch were actually CIA agents.

    9. Sandy died on the beach at the beginning of Grease.

    "This is not a joke. My grandma never liked us watching the movie because she was convinced Sandy died on the beach at the beginning. She claimed that the entire movie was one big fantasy, which explained why it was so surreal."

    10. The movie Life was a stealth origin story for Venom.

    "I still prefer to imagine that this one is true, since it fits the mythos so well. Both are Sony films, too, so they own all those characters. Life could even be an alternate universe, since Deadpool and Mysterio show up. It still would have been better than what we got for both films!"

    11. Andy’s mom in the Toy Story universe is Emily, Jessie’s original owner.

    12. The entire ending — from when Cooper awakes at the space habitat onward — is actually Cooper’s delirium before his death in Interstellar.

    "He never actually got out of the tesseract alive and never got to meet his daughter again. There's some subtle proof in the movie, like his daughter’s family not looking at him when he walks to her bed."

    13. Jack from Titanic is actually a time traveler.

    "This theory is based on the fact that he talks about a few things that have not been created at the time when the Titanic sank. I don't remember all of the details of the theory, but one was the lake where he said he went ice-fishing as a kid. And now he traveled through time to find Rose and show her how different her life could/should be and break away from her unhappy life."

    14. The trolls are the true villains in Frozen.

    "The lyricists are extremely clever, which we know from the previous songs, and having them sing 'Get the fiancé out of the way!' seems a little too much like a coincidence for them to have not played a part in what happened. We know they can do magic, we know they want Anna and Kristoff together, and — up until this point — we don't really see Hans doing anything villainous. It's not until after their song that he seems to really change, and take on the more villainous aspects. Having the trolls be the villains is a bit of a darker take, but I think it works better for the film!"

    15. President Snow made the Hunger Games to monitor the districts' strength in The Hunger Games universe.

    "President Snow made the Hunger Games for more reasons than just to get revenge on the districts. It was also to keep tabs on them, and find which districts were most likely to rebel against the Capitol. For those districts where people put their name in the bowl extra times for grain and seed, it told him who is most likely to be desperate for food and join the rebels. The career districts told him who are the most violent and likely to rebel. If anyone read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (the prequel), it shows that President Snow is also pretty smart, so to me this makes a lot of sense."

    16. All of the Pixar films take place in the same universe.

    "Toy Story is the present day, and you find the toys in many of the movies.

    Finding Nemo is set in their universe because there are Buzz Lightyear toys in the dentist's office, as well as a child reading a Mr. Incredible comic book, placing The Incredibles in that universe as well. 

    Monsters Inc. takes place in the future, when humanity has died off and their doors are really time travel–related, rather than sending monsters to another universe. Boo remembers her time with Sully and Mike and becomes a witch to attempt to find them, but a time travel spell went haywire and she went back to medieval Scotland and gave Merida the pie to turn her mother into a bear in Brave. There's a carving of Sully in her wood carving store, which supports this.

    I'm pretty sure Onward takes place between the human world and the monster world — the only one I'm not sure about yet is Soul."

    17. And finally, of course: "Darth Jar Jar" was the evil mastermind in the Star Wars universe.

    "I love the theory that Jar Jar Binks was really a Sith Lord controlling everything. I can totally see it, he was just a little *too* lucky."
