That's right. The "hover engines" actually generate a magnetic field.

As the Guardian points out, it basically works like a Japanese bullet train. Though it has no propulsion – the paper reports: "it is possible to generate a gentle bias towards one direction or another using the magnetic fields generated beneath the board using touch-sensitive plates under foot."

However, the founder of Arx Pax, the company running the board's Kickstarter, told the paper the power of the fields is such that it can "enable platforms to hover over non-ferrous materials with payloads of virtually any size and weight."

Also – they have ideas for a hover park, and it looks incredible.

The company is looking for $250,000 in funding. A board will cost $10,000.

There's also a Whitebox developer kit which will allow people to play with the technology on a smaller scale, and control it via their smart phone.
