Kourounis told The Huffington Post it was "like a window into hell".
And described the 1,200 foot descent as being "like a reverse climbing of Everest".
Apparently the splashes of lava melted holes in his clothes.
He told the website there was "terrible weather, tremendous heat from the lava, descending and ascending 400 metres of near vertical, loose rock face, acid rain so strong that it could have come from a car battery, and a variety of other craziness".
But it was all worth it for this selfie, no doubt.
