It's an annual competition in which MPs compete to see who has the best dog.

It's Westminster dog of the year day, most competitive vote in parliament. Here's David Burrowes MP with Cholmeley.

It's organised by the Kennel Club. This year, fifteen MP/dog pairs entered the public vote.

Weirdly, out of the 15 MPs who entered the contest, 12 are Conservatives. Tories are clearly "dog people".

Fellow Lib Dem Martin Horwood was listed as one of the entrants, but it seems like he might not have turned up.

And Falkirk MP Eric Joyce - who resigned from the Labour party in 2012 - was the closest the event got to a Labour MP.

Eric Joyce MP may prefer brawling with Tories but I can reveal his dog Brodie "likes a bacon sandwich".

Some MPs made bad political jokes in an effort to boost their dog's chances of winning.

International development minister Alan Duncan has made a manifesto for Noodle, inc "an end to Yelp to Buy".

Some had difficulty controlling their companions.

Cholmeley currently seems keener on stealing Noodle's tennis ball, unfortunately #westminsterdog

    Some just enjoyed the day.

David Amess MP (of "don't take cake fame") starts the day with his two pugs and a glass of champagne.

But the overall winner was Noodle, owned by Minister of State for International Development Alan Duncan.

Well-groomed, glossy-haired, loyal, and with a friendly and enthusiastic personality, Alan Duncan was delighted by his dog's win.
