Japanese scientists have worked out how to make objects levitate using sound.

The process is called 3D mid-air acoustic manipulation.

Particles are trapped in the node of a standing wave at the focal point created by four phased-arrays.

This means that by carefully positioning speakers around the object and playing a note of the right frequency, the scientists can make a pocket of moving air that holds the object in mid-air.

Basically, it's amazing.
