17 American Things All Aussie Girls Were Envious Of Growing Up

What is a homecoming dance and why can't I attend one?

1. Not being able to easily join a cheerleading squad like in Bring It On.

2. Not being able to start a babysitters club.

...although to be fair, that had less to do with your location and more to do with the fact that you were 11.

3. Not being able to join a sorority like in Legally Blonde or Greek.

4. Not being able to wear casual clothes to school.

5. Not having a three-month summer break in the middle of the year.

6. Not being able to go to a long summer camp.

7. Hearing that your favourite bands are touring "the world" - meaning North America and Europe.

8. Knowing that there was literally no chance that you'd ever run into your favourite celebrities in the wild.

9. Disneyland being so. Far. Away.

10. Not having a prom.

11. Not being able to attend a homecoming dance.

12. Having big movie releases held back for months after the US release date to tie in with Aussie school holidays.

13. Wanting to go trick-or-treating on Halloween but your neighbours not having any treats to give you.

14. Not being able to eat at a cafeteria with all your friends during lunch.

15. Not being able to have a white Christmas.

16. Not even really understanding what Thanksgiving is, but wanting to sit around eating food and saying what you're thankful for, like they did on Friends.

17. Not being able to watch your shows at the same time as the USA.
