Christ Crutcher's "Whale Talk." It's about a young man with anger issues who has to join his high school swim team, and creates the most misfit group of swimmers ever. It deals with racism and dealing with your inner demons, and it's wonderful.
The Golem and the Jinni, by Helene Wecker. It's a love story that takes place in 1899 New York City and is also a commentary on the class divisions of the time period. Very magical.
I really like "How the Pooka Came to New York City" by Delia Sherman. It's a period piece that captures the difficulties new immigrants -- both human and Fey -- faced when coming to America. Great for those who enjoy fantasy.
