Sammy Davis Jr was fine. What was offensive was Crystal's joke right after Octavia won: “After I saw The Help I just wanted to hug the first black woman I saw, which from Beverly Hills is about a 45 minute drive.” Also, his comment on how Viola Davis must be so grateful for the opportunity to portray a strong black woman that isn't a Tyler Perry role.

I'm not black so it's not my call to make, but it seems to me there's a big, big difference between dressing up as a specific and recognizable black person, versus dressing up as a generic black person stereotype. It's still probably best to just never do blackface and leave it at that, just to be sure.
