14 Of The Most Heartbreaking Stories About Going Over Canadian Phone Data Limits

"It was like playing Russian roulette with my bank account."

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to share their data horror stories.

Because Canadian data plans can be crazy expensive.

    Like seriously...

Here are the 15 most heartbreaking stories from people who have exceeded their data limits:

    1. The Trailer Park Trap

My best friend used to be obsessed with The Trailer Park Boys and every second of the day he'd be watching it. He watched it at school and thought he was using wifi but he wasn't. He ended up finishing the entire series and going 43 GBs over his data.

    3. The Gambler

I was having a huge argument with my ex on messenger and refused to lose, so I kept having to turn my data on just long enough to load his message and respond before switching it back off. It was like playing Russian roulette with my bank account.

    5. The Broken Heart

I had just started dating my boyfriend and was leaving on a family cruise. I wanted to stay in contact but didn't want to pay the data charges. I didn't use my phone unless I had wifi so I thought I would be okay. We texted maybe, every other day for a week? I got home and realized I never turned my roaming off and was charged over $1200.

My dad bought me an a 'V' phone when I was 14, it was one of the first smartphones with Verizon. The data never ran out and my dad received a bill. A $780 bill.

    7. The Disconnected Dilemma

I only have 500MB of data and once, two days into my plan, I was watching a 13 minute long YouTube video on my house's WiFi and for some reason it disconnected from it and connected to my LTE network without notifying me and used all of my month's data.

    8. The Kardashian Katastrophe

Recently I hit an all time low. I used all the data on my family's plan only a day after we got to reset. I played hours worth of Kim Kardashian Hollywood all without wifi.

    10. The Vacation Nightmare

I literally racked up a $9,900+ phone bill over the span of one week in France because my provider didn't offer a very good roaming package at the time. They brought it down to $800 bones, but still...

    11. The Doomed Delivery

I was starving and had been trying to decide what food I wanted to order online for at least 30 minutes. I decided on Chinese delivery and got as far as where to pay and then my data stopped working. I cried.

    12. The Awkward Ask

I was out to eat with friends at a restaurant with no wifi (go figure!) and I got the notification that I had run out of data. I had no cash and now no way to transfer money from my savings account to my debit card, so I had to borrow money to cover the bill. It was so embarrassing.

    13. The Good First Impression

I went to Switzerland on a high school trip when the iPhone first came out. I didn't know I had to turn off the data and racked up a $1300 bill which I back-tracked on the phone at 2am while crying hysterically, scaring my host family.

    14. And The Different Kind Of Data Story

As a research nerd, I thought it this was about running out of data in a statistical analysis... like realizing you don't have enough statistical power to run the test you wanted to run because you didn't collect enough data or had too much missing data. I really need to get out more.
