First photo! Ali walks past the cafe I work at in Berlin every morning at 9:05am. I’m not sure where he is going, but we always say hello to each other. He always wears such great clothes. I don’t speak much German and he speaks a little bit of English, but I managed to ask if I could take his photo. He gladly accepted.
Ali seems to remember if I have already taken a photo of a particular outfit, and doesn’t usually let me do repeats. This is the first appearance of this brown velour jacket.
Recognise that moustache? That’s Ali on the left.
I ran into him on the tram on the other side of the city one evening last week and we finally had time to have a chat (in my very limited German and with his handful of English words)
Three things I gleaned from this encounter:
Ali has lived in Berlin for 44 years.
He is a retired doctor but now works as a tailor
He has 18 children
What an amazing life. Can’t wait to learn more
Today I went apple picking with Ali, his boss and his boss’s daughter. The day started off with a Lahmacun (Turkish Pizza) before we ventured out to an orchard about an hour outside of the city.
Today was my first day back at work after two weeks and I think Ali and I were equally excited to see each other. We’ve seen this suit before, however the way he is working that coat (and a new pose!) is just wonderful!
