Manuel Carrera captured video footage of a crocodile chasing a swimmer in Sian Ka'an, Mexico.

Tourists looked on from the Boca Paila bridge as the crocodile pursued the swimmer towards the shore.

Finally, one quick-thinking observer lobbed a missile at the crocodile, which diverted its attention.

The crocodile's leisurely pace may have been down to the fact that it was used to humans, having already become an "expert" in stealing fish from local fishermen.

"Unfortunately, that crocodile already associated us with food," Carrera told Notacaribe.

The lesson here, if there is one, is this: Do not feed the local wildlife.
