Cheetahs Are Faster, Wyoming

On Monday night's Colbert Report, the Congresswoman from Wyoming (they only have one) said her state's antelopes are the fastest animals in the world. Stephen, of course, disagreed. He said cheetahs were faster, and he's right. According to multiple sources, cheetahs top off at around 70 miles per hour while antelope crawl along at just 60. Wyoming just learned something important.

  • From Wiki on Pronghorn.
The top speed is very hard to measure accurately and varies between individuals; it is variously cited as up to 70 km/h,[4] 72 km/h,[3] or 86 km/h.[5] It is often cited as the second-fastest land animal, second only to the cheetah.[7] It can however sustain high speeds longer than cheetahs. So Cheetahs are faster over short distances. In the Olympics, it's like the Cheetah is the 100m champion, and the pronghorn the 200m champion.

  • Curiously, pronghorns aren't even antelopes. Mountain goats aren't goats, either. And I sure hope I don't have to tell you all about “buffalo,” or bison, too…. You can thank me later.
