Police had initially claimed the 24-year-old had been found before revealing it was mistake.

    Update - April 14, 7:35 p.m. (BST)

Metropolitan Police have now released a second statement claiming the announcement Mami Konneh Lahun had been found was wrong.

"Police are still looking to trace a female athlete who has not been seen since finishing this weekend's London Marathon in 20th place," the statement declared.

Earlier, police claimed Konneh Lahun, from Sierra Leone, had been found "safe and well", having returned to her temporary accommodation in Greenwich.

Police said Konneh Lahun had been staying at an address in Greenwich since arriving in the UK on 7 April.

She is due to fly home later today but has not returned to her temporary accommodation following the marathon.

The police said the 24-year-old has no known links to the UK and is not in possession of a mobile phone.
