This actually completely shocks me. It’s been fifteen years or more since I’ve heard of a rescue group or shelter that will allow you to take a dog home same-day even if you intentionally came for that very purpose, let alone if you spontaneously decided on it. Wow. Every one I’ve seen (I worked at PetSmart for 4 years, and ohgod were Saturdays hard!) you have to wait at least 3 days after seeing the dog at PetSmart (or going to the shelter) before you’re allowed to take your Chosen One home with you, and a good majority require you to have a home check first. Plus if you live in an apartment, landlord permission, if you live in a house, do you have a fence, etc… bring the whole family to meet them (including other pets), tell them if you want kids in the next 5-10 years if you don’t have them already - all sorts of stuff. I’m genuinely shocked that any rescue/shelter group at PetSmart was okay with this. For the record…in general, it’s not the best idea to “unexpectedly” adopt a dog (or any kind of pet) - there are of course exceptions to every rule, and the person in the article mentioned they were already thinking about it for summer anyway, but generally “OMG look at the cute puppy!” at PetSmart is not a good way to go.
