Riff 11 months agoThere’s always going to be some bastardization of these countercultural styles, and, really, it’s kind of a waste of time to get hung up on what other people are wearing. Unless it’s in direct conflict with the ideals of that subculture (like some fashion punks who spend hundreds of dollars on a studded, patched jacket they didn’t make themselves), I can’t say that I can judge their genuine interest and involvement in the scene based on their fucking clothes. Anyone can emulate the ‘original’ style perfectly - it doesn’t mean they’re any more sincere than someone who shows up at a concert in a T-shirt and jeans or even looks like a ‘hipster’.
If I judge people in a scene, it’s based on what they do (or don’t do) within that scene. If anything, I hope that mainstream co-opting of subculture motivates those communities to further push the boundaries of their styles and challenge mainstream fashion. -
