Sizing Up The 16 New Project Runway Contestants
OMG new season starts tonight! Let’s pigeonhole all of the contestants based on what they look like and what little information is available on the Project Runway site.
1. Alicia Hardesty
Her Aesthetic: Recycled eco-chic for the modern Lilith Fair girl.
The Challenge She’ll Probably Win: The “Dumpster Diving” Challenge. Or maybe the “Make a Dress Out of Whole Foods Bags” Challenge. Or maybe the “Create a Pantsuit out of Only Granola” Challenge.
4. Andrea Katz
Her Aesthetic: Semi-avant-garde clothing for retired high school art teachers.
The Challenge She’ll Probably Win: The “Design a Dress for Heidi Klum’s Grandma” Challenge.
7. Beatrice Guapo
Her Aesthetic: The fictional Lauren Conrad for ShopBop line.
The Challenge She’ll Probably Win: The “Macy’s” Challenge, or whatever department store that happens to be sponsoring the show at the moment.
10. Buffi Jashanmal
Her Aesthetic: The kind of clothing that makes Nina Garcia wrinkle her nose and say,”This looks…sad.”
The Challenge She’ll Probably Win: The “Design an Outfit for a Coachella Attendee” Challenge.
13. Fabio Costa
His Aesthetic: The sort of stuff that anyone could DIY out of an old pair of leggings and some scissors.
The Challenge He’ll Probably Win: Heidi Klum’s Perennial “Make Something for My Boring Athletic Line” Challenge.
16. Kooan Kosuke
His Aesthetic: I have no idea, but I can already tell he’s going to be my favorite.
The Challenge He’ll Probably Win: The “Design an Outfit for a Cartoon Character” Challenge.
19. Gunnar Deatherage
His Aesthetic: His portfolio looks very “If Vivienne Westwood Had an Etsy Shop.”
The Challenge He’ll Probably Win: The “Impress Vivienne Westwood, who Happens to Be Our Guest Judge” Challenge.
22. Sonjia Williams
Her Aesthetic: Mismatched pieces with crazy prints. She’s the new Mondo.
The Challenge She’ll Probably Win: The “Design a Pattern” Challenge.
25. Dmitry Sholokhov
His Aesthetic: Completely unwearable clothing that will make Tim Gunn give a lot of quizzical head tilts.
The Challenge He’ll Probably Win: The “Outfit Inspired by a Piece You Saw at MOMA” Challenge
28. Ven Budhu
His Aesthetic: Boring pageant gowns. There’s always one of these designers on every season.
The Challenge He’ll Probably Win: The “Design a Dress for a B-List Celeb to Go to an Awards Show You’ve Never Heard Of” Challenge.
31. Lantie Foster
Her Aesthetic: The straight-to-QVC kind. Seriously, she seems very, very commercial.
The Challenge She’ll Probably Win: The “Design an Outfit We Can Sell on QVC” Challenge.
34. Raul Osorio
His Aesthetic: Menswear. He’s going to be the person who starts crying because he has to make a ball gown for the first time in his life.
The Challenge He’ll Probably Win: The “Menswear” Challenge. Although the person who does menswear never seems to actually perform well for this one, despite saying “This is my challenge…no one else in this competition has EVER done menswear!” as many times and as dramatically as possible.
37. Melissa Fleis
Her Aesthetic: Black clothing for sorority girls who move to NYC and decide they need to dress more edgy.
The Challenge She’ll Probably Win: The “Design an Outfit for a Sorority Girl who Just Moved to the Big City” Challenge.
40. Christopher Palu
His Aesthetic: Women’s careerwear. His sketches are very “Jones New York.”
The Challenge He’ll Probably Win: None. He’s the guy who somehow makes it to the 9th episode out of sheer mediocrity.
43. Elena Slivnyak
Her Aesthetic: Clothing that could actually be in a real fashion magazine or on a real runway.
The Challenge She’ll Probably Win: The “Haute Couture” Challenge.
46. Nathan Paul
His Aesthetic: Elegant dresses, but always with one interesting detail.
The Challenge He’ll Probably Win: All of them. I can already tell this guy is going to win.
