33 Meticulous Cleaning Tricks For The OCD Person Inside You

And if you don’t follow these rules, your world will probably fall apart. Just kidding! But OCD or not, you can probably stand to get a little more thorough with your cleaning, while saving time in the long run.

I know, right? Now tell your friends!
33 Meticulous Cleaning Tricks For The OCD ...
Peggy Wang

1. Use a binder clip as a sponge stand.

This will allow it to air-dry instead of getting all mildewy.

2.

To kill the germs and viruses that have gathered on your nasty sponges, microwave on high for 2 minutes and let cool. This only works for non-metal sponges!

3. Clean your clean machine: the washer.

This page gives you a step-by-step way to get the grime off the nooks and crannies of your washing machine.

4. When your toaster gets all sticky and gunky…

Use a few drops of water, cream of tartar, and a sponge to get your stainless steel appliances looking brand new again.

Now watch this video on how to clean the INSIDE of the toaster.

5. Clean your sink drain.

Your sink drain is home to some of the grimiest dirt and germs. Get directions on how to use baking soda, a toothbrush, and citrus fruits to get your sink smelling and looking fresh.

6. Clean your window tracks.

Dip a q-tip in white vinegar and run it along the track. For more window cleaning tips, check out Ask Anna.

7. Make the steel plate on your iron smooth and shiny again.

All you need is salt. Get the directions here.

8. Refresh your mattress.

Once you sprinkle the ingredients on, you’ll also need to vaccuum the bed. Get the full instructions here.

Hint: you can also use fabric softener instead of lavender oil if you DON’T want to do this the all-natural way.

9. Keep baseboards clean with fabric softener.

10. Remove any carpet stain (and anything off a mattress as well).

11. Use an iron to remove REALLY stubborn stains from carpet.

12. Invest in a “Purifying Light Sanitizing Cutting Board System.”

It costs $129 but just think of all the germs from old food that could be embedded in your cutting boards.

13. Dust first, then vacuum.

That way you can vacuum up all the fallen dust. On a sidenote, did you know that dust is made up of 80% human skin?

14. Clean your candles with pantyhose.

It’ll get the dust off.

15. Unscrew light bulbs and wipe off with a microfiber cloth.

Dust builds up on those things.

16. Rub a faucet with waxed paper to prevent water spots and finger prints.

You can also remove mineral deposits easily with white vinegar.

17. Snip off a slice of a Magic Eraser and drop it in the toilet.

Let it float overnight and it’ll remove any toilet ring. No scrubbing! No one wants to be touching toilet germs, not even with gloves on.

18. Keep a Scotch Brite dishwand in the shower filled with 1/2 vinegar, 1/2 dishwashing detergent.

This will make it easy and convenient to wipe down the walls while you’re in the shower.

19. Get rid of household odors with vanilla extract in the oven.

“Put two caps full of vanilla extract in a coffee cup, then place it in the oven at 300 degrees for one hour. Within twenty minutes the whole house smells like Heaven.”

20. Use slow cooker liners.

You know these things are a pain to clean.

21. Clean old paintings with a bagel cut in half.

Get the full directions here.

22. Clean blinds with an old sock.

Get the full directions here.

23. While cleaning the bathroom, fill the tub up with a couple of inches of the hottest water you can draw from the tap.

Heating up the bathroom 10 degrees above the normal air temperature “doubles the effectiveness” of alkaline cleansers. It’s a trick hotel staffers use. Let disinfectants sit for at least 5-7 minutes, and always rinse off cleaners to prevent build-up.

24. Cut a hole in a cloth napkin to make dust covers for coats and vests.

25. Use foil in your George Foreman grill or panini maker to prevent mess.

Electrical appliances are a pain to clean, and you can’t just dunk the whole thing in soapy water. Prevent disgusting drips and messes by either covering the insides of the grill with foil, or wrapping the item you want to grill in foil.

26. Use WD-40 to erase scuff marks on floors.

27. Pour a packet of lemonade Kool-Aid into the detergent cup of your dishwasher.

It’ll remove lime deposits and iron stains.

28. Know your uses for vinegar and natural cleaning agents.

If you’re paranoid about chemicals (many OCDers are), white vinegar is an ideal alternative. It kills 99% of bacterias, 82% of molds and more than 80% of viruses. You can use it with tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide, or baking soda to increase its antibacterial effectiveness. However, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar should be applied separately, not mixed together. Also, don’t use vinegar in your microwave or oven — your kitchen will smell like vinegar for days when using those appliances. And never mix bleach with vinegar in hopes of amplifying the cleaning power — it creates a dangerous chemical reaction.

Cream of tartar is another natural cleaning agent. Get more tips on how to use cream of tartar here.

Here’s an effective but natural recipe for Martha Stewart’s Tub Scrub.

29. Hang your brooms and mops instead of storing them on the floor.

This keeps them from getting mildewed and bent.

30. Start cleaning out your dryer vents.

You’ll prevent fires by cleaning out the dryer vent every six months. Get the full directions here.

31. Behold, the sanitizing vacuum cleaner.

It’s $120 from Verilux. They also sell a UV sanitizing wand that kills E. coli, dust mite eggs, and other germs and allergens.

Source: amazon.com

32. Use a Solution of 1/2 Coconut Oil and 1/2 Baking Soda to Remove Sticky Residues

It’s the non-chemical equivalent of Goo Gone.

33. The ultimate organization tip: anything and everything should have a place.

This seems to be the #1 organization tip from OCDers: everything you own should have a place to be put away, and should always be put back to that place after use. Sounds simple, but it’s a practice that takes getting used to if you’re an inherently messy person.

#10 BEWARE!!!! Be careful when doing this advice…we used this mixture on beige carpet and you could see every spray from where we used the “blue” Dawn..then we scrubbed and scrubbed the carpet to get the “blue” off and even used a carpet shampooer and it still would come clean..AND it bleached out the area of the carpet we used the solution on.

i’m pretty sure buzzfeed should leave the junky handy tips to lifehacker. Lifehacker sucks at them but some of these are downright stupid. 4. if you clean your toaster with an abrasive sponge, it’s likely not the cream of tartar working. secondly, that toaster looks like crap, they’ve scratched it all up and ruined the finish. 8. baking soda an lavender aren’t cleaning anything. it’s just making it stink like lavender. 9. you can also keep baseboards clean by vacuuming them when you vacuum the floor. you don’t need to waste fabric softener. 12. no. don’t ever buy that.. don’t every suggest buying that. it’s above all, a waste of resources to create and more importantly a waste of money to buy. none of them have bright enough lights to actually do anything. 15. Unscrew lightbulbs and wipe them off with anything you can find. it doesn’t need to be microfiber. 17. that’s just stupid. it takes 2 seconds of scrubbing to clean a toilet ring. which you wouldn’t have if you were obsessive about cleaning because you’d likely make sure your toilet stays rather clean (like i do and i’m not obsessive) 19. no. just make your house smell really stupidly strongly of vanilla instead of household odors.  20. you lazy assholes, fill the cooker with water and let it soak for a few hours. it’ll be easy to clean. 21. are you retarded? you’re seriously suggesting we rub a food on a painting? well, hope you don’t care about that painting too much. 26. and make your house reek of wd-40 31. doesn’t do anything except make people feel better.

A solution of Boraxo or Calgon will do most of the cleaning in these tips. Or, a mix of baking soda and white vinegar. Or both.

    • lisas56 4 months ago

Just keep a little bleach bottle near your sink and dip sponge or dishrag in bleach water with a little liquid detergent. You only need a teaspoon or so of bleach, but it works great. Also use bleached sponge on cutting boards after scrubbing thoroughly after use.

    • aurorab5 4 months ago

Sponges are cheap; you can buy them 4 for a dollar at the dollar store. Just throw them out when they start to stink; no nasty smell on your hands and no fire hazard by microwaving them.

OCD runs in my family and I didn’t even realize it until I saw an episode on a health channel about the illness. My grandpa was OCD. He would do certain things over and over again and couldn’t stop or he would become agitated. When entering the house he had a ritual of jiggling the door handle a certain number of times and running his fingers around the door opening in a certain pattern and number of times. It used to drive my grandma insane, she was usually stuck in behind him and thought he did it to irritate her. There were many other rituals, but this is the one that stuck in my mind the most. He also happened to have the worst hygene and cleanliness.

    • micheller31 5 months ago

#2 I tried this and it almost caught fire leaving a large burnt spot on the sponge and the tray in my microwave.

Actually, there are two forms of OCD. One manifests as a personality disorder, most likely what was referenced in this article (hyper-cleanliness,perfectionism, lining up objects and keeping environments spotless), while the other is an anxiety disorder which can be debilitating (obsession with unrealistic fears, compulsion to perform an act repetitively in order to assuage fear/anxiety).

      # 10 & 11, will vinegar remove soap scum? Also, how do you use the iron to remove stains from carpet?

      • Purpleburner 5 months ago

Right? Where are the actual instructions? And why does it have to be BLUE dawn??

      • katiej11 4 months ago

I used the green apple Dawn in my shower with vinegar and it removed everything just fine. I don’t think the color matters, just that it’s Dawn. I use mine in a spray bottle, and do it after our shower, it also helps to let the vinegar and soap sit for about 20-30 minutes before wiping off.

      • aurorab5 4 months ago

I make a mixture of 1:1 dish soap (does not have to be Dawn) and hot vinegar. Pour it in a spray bottle and spray it on your glass shower doors or surfaces with soap scum. Let it sit for about 20 minutes to so, use a non-abrasive scrubber, gently scrub, then rinse off. The dish soap helps the vinegar to stick to the surface, rather than drying off too quickly while it cuts the soap scum.

I spent most of the weekend for this….so here goes. Instead of vinegar use ammonia…DO NOT WORRY…it won’t fade your furniture IF you do the following.. Place 1 part Amonia and 1 part hottest water you can get out of the faucet. Them I squeze just a hint of lemon in the spray bottle with the hot Water and Amonia. Meanwhile your steam Iron has been heating on high. You’ll also need a WHITE towel.
        1. Treat carpet with spray bottle ingredients
        2. Wait about 1 minute..then cover with white towel.
        3. Steam until you no longer see stain coming up on towel.
        4. You may need to do this several times, but I’m here to say it works. ;)

      • jamesleef 3 months ago

Do NOT use ammonia casually. It is poison on your skin and in your eyes and lungs. The uses bleach and ammonia should be very few in your home!

Most of these ‘tips’ have an unwritten step, and that’s “then throw it into the garbage!” Why the hell do you need a crockpot liner?

You know, I have tried most of these suggestions, and there is the key. No one has to do any of these, so pass them by and make no comments. All of these work, and some people like cleanliness and being careful about molds, viruses, etc. I heard of a man who had half of his face eaten away by black mold on bread. Let’s just be grateful for people who share these ideas.

Darn, the link to #8 doesn’t work (maybe it’s just right at this moment?) which sucks because I could use those tips xD #33’s photo makes me so so happy.

#7 - the “Before” and “After” pictures are not of the same iron.

    • devans00 7 months ago

Proud to say I already do some of these.

    • meresparrow 7 months ago

This is a nice list of helpful tips, but as someone with OCD I really wish people would stop using “OCD” to refer to things other than the actual disorder. It’s insulting, offensive, and trivializes the experience of those who suffer from OCD.
