When her classroom had experienced bullying problems, a New York teacher had the kids put away the textbooks and each take out a single sheet of paper.
She asked them to crumple it up, throw it on the ground, stomp on it - anything they wanted as long as they didn’t tear it.
Then she told the students to unfold their pieces of paper as carefully as possible, flatten it back out, and restore it as well as they could to its original state.
Next, she asked them to apologize to their piece of paper for what they had done.
But no matter how much they apologized and tried to smooth it out, the page was still crumpled and dirty.
The scars they had left behind would never go away, she explained. No matter how many times they apologized, there would always be marks on that page.
Just like bullying, the damage is irreversible...
... it never really goes away.
