This clearly only applies to Catholic Schools in the US. I went to Catholic School in Germany and most of these do not apply there. No uniforms. Sex ed. No “Christian-edited” textbooks. And zOMG we were taught evolution.

So I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a young Catholic that my school experience was different.  At school:

      -gay was okay
-we could speak to our teachers about our sex life without getting judged
-we welcomed people from other religions into our school, we even had a class teaching us about different religions/ways of life & teachings us that in the end we’re all the same and that’s why we should love each other
-we didn’t have uniforms until high school
-girls were allowed to wear the boys’ uniforms
-the boys were allowed to wear the girls’ uniforms (but everyone agreed that the kilt was uncomfortable, so the school redesigned it for comfort) It was pretty awesome, especially because of the proper education thanks to government funding. To all the athiest, agnostics, other-religions, LGBT people who had a terrible time at a Catholic school, I’m sorry for you, but I just hope you know that there are Catholic schools out there that have caught up to speed.

i am 31, and my school was similiar to how you describe yours. Did nuns run your schools? apparently they are progressive, its the priests that usually subscribe to the drivel. It was perfectly ok to be gay in my schools also. We had people of different religions too! And we had a girl in my theology class in senior year who was athiest, and she was our teachers favorite (a nun!) we even had a nun in junior year who told us that she used to be engaged and she wasnt a virgin, either! HA!! I feel bad for people who got stuck at bad schools, but most people i know went to schools like us!

CATHOLIC SCHOOL, and we do have sex ed…. It’s just called morality. Today we watched a lifetime movie about the horrors of prostitution.

Mass was the best, kids would take huge swigs of wine to try to catch a buzz.

I would bicycle to a Parish several miles away from my home Parish for confession when I entered puberty. (Didn’t want to be recognized) “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It’s been two weeks since my last confession; since then I have masturbated 3,638 times……”

I went to catholic school from k-8th grade. All I can say is thank god I went to public high school. Catholic school was the worst time of my life! So glad my family could afford catholic high school. Now I can think on my own and make my own opinions instead of being told what to think!

Went to Catholic school from Pre-K to 12th grade. Albeit, 4 different schools, but from 4th grade on I was in the same basic area until I graduated HS. Grade school was kind of hell, but HS was a lot better. I went to an all girls Catholic HS, run by the coolest nun ever, who accepted the inevitable lesbian and bi girls in the school with TRUE Catholic love, and just wanted us to be happy, well adjusted girls. I loved my Health class we had in Freshman year, it was hilarious because the teacher should have been a stand up comedian. Soooo many sex jokes lol. (And she did mention contraception as an option, which was awesome) But by the time I graduated and went to college I forgot everything I’d learned for the most part. xD I was in honors classes, admittedly, with a lot of the girls I knew in grade school and I AM still friends with a few. I actually MISS not having to think about what I wore every day. It’s a real chore now without a uniform. :/ And boys. Complicate. Everything. lol. I’m also pretty much Agnostic. 15 years of Catholic school made me swear off church like a bad habit.

Too true! I still am freaked by nuns!
      Nowadays, I’m a Dudeist Priest.

Once I grew up and learned that it was okay to think for myself, I gave Catholicism up for Lent and never looked back.

Having gone to Catholic school from kindergarten all the way to my Junior year of high school, I can honestly say it was the worst time of my life. I mean it’s obviously no place for an atheist lesbian, but honestly if I hadn’t up and left for senior year (I insisted on having one ‘good year’ of high school, and I did by leaving), I would probably be the most miserable person in town. The only good thing that came out of it was the friends I made in high school.

I obviously had a very unusual experience of Catholic school. We had a uniform, but no plaid. We weren’t taught that we were naturally bad or going to hell - and I’m not even baptised, actually. We were given sex education, weren’t taught by nuns, weren’t particularly indoctrinated in terms of marriage. Our school also consistently produced the best grades at GCSE/AS/A Level in the local authority. Now, as an adult, I actively campaign for gay marriage, am pro-choice and am in a relationship with no pressure to marry unless I want to. Oh, and I was, and still am, left-handed (?!). I couldn’t have asked for much more from my education, to be honest. I’m sorry for those who had a bad experience, as clearly they outnumber those of us who didn’t.

#3 So ANNOYING. It was a daily battle for me:( Two things I might hate most in life, tucked in shirts and math.

I didn’t know what the male anatomy looked like until I was 19 and in college. True story.

      • J. Random 3 months ago

I still don’t, and hope I never suffer the violent fate of having to. In public school you had to take a science to graduate. I took astronomy rather than (ew) biology or anatomy. The reason I didn’t take anatomy was so that I didn’t have to look at naked pictures, and the reason I didn’t take biology was so that I didn’t have to learn about hormones. The astronomy teacher basically just talked about the moon landings and sci-fi, actually, and I didn’t really learn much in the scientific realm. A decent understanding of the Greek myths about the constellations and the Church’s opposition to Galileo — oh, and whole lot about the various alien races of “Star Trek.” :-) I’ll take a whole September through June of watching “V,” “Apollo 13” and “Galactica” over those disgusting anatomy books any day. I’m a girl, by the way, an avowed anti-sexual celibate and proud. (Though I probably wouldn’t have taken astronomy at parochial school — if only the church didn’t have a history of opposing heliocentricism!) Catholic school was too expensive, but I had a yearning to get away from those trashy public school kids who were “experimenting” in the hallways. Ew, ew, a thousand times ew. And did I mention ew?
