People Are Freaking Out About This Photo Of Alleged People Smuggler "Bribes"

"Show us the money!"... Oh there it is.

Fairfax Media reporters have been uncovering the huge story about alleged bribes paid from Australia to Indonesian people smugglers.. Well now they've reportedly found the money!

Fanned out in US dollars, the wads of cash are reportedly part of bribes given to Indonesian people smugglers from Australian security agencies.

The bribes are apparently part of a strategy to keep people smugglers from leaving Indonesia in leaky boatloads of asylum seekers.

The prime minister has repeatedly not answered questions on the unfolding story, preferring instead to point out that the government's policy has stopped asylum seeker boats.

But the photos themselves - and the fact they feature wads of US $100 bills - have shocked everyone.

"No no. Fan the cash out. Yeahhhhh that's it"

People were immediately having fun with the incredible story and re-imagining Australia's immigration policy.

And of course Fairfax Media's hilarious low-fi watermark wasn't going to get off easily.

"what are you gonna spend your cash on?" "aw, reckon i might just hold onto it in case fairfax wants a pic one day"

There were accurate comparisons to the comical moment News Corp went mental with watermarks last year.

The Fairfax watermark on the Indonesian cash is the best one since News Corp on the James Packer fight photos

Weird calls being made at Fairfax today

Not to be outdone the Guardian Australia photo editor was playing around with some new designs.

Does my watermark look big in this? @murpharoo @GuardianAus #politicslive

But really the block-text yellow badge was popping up everywhere.

Even in the elusive "print off meme" category.

Just watermarked the entire City of Sydney irl, deal with it

At least Fairfax Media's photo editor had a sense of humor who came up with an alternate design.

@MarkDiStef At least we didn't make it Comic Sans.

Then there was the one that went too far. CANNOT UNSEE.
