Teaching English Abroad, Explained By Mean Girls

    You're not a regular teacher. You're a cool teacher.

Your students ask you the most bizarre questions about the United States.

Really, they're all shocked that you aren't morbidly obese.

Though you might be soon, after indulging in your new country's cuisine so much.

You frequently confuse foreign words and phrases.

You definitely aren't up on the cool slang.

You're sure that you mispronounce things all the time.

Sometimes you just give up and speak in English.

But people constantly tell you how cute your accent is.

You don't always understand your new country's customs.

You worry that you ask too many dumb questions.

Sometimes you feel out of place.

    You never blend in.

But you try to just go with it.

Your students are always impressing you and teaching you new things.

Which is why you really want them to like you.

If you join a gym there, it is NOT what you're used to.

You have to force yourself not to blow through your tiny salary the first week of every month.

    You flock to other English-speakers.

Unless it's New York or California, no one knows where you're from in the U.S.

    Everyone mispronounces your name.

    People can't believe you aren't a student.

Sometimes it's all just too overwhelming.

But hopefully you can find someone to show you the ropes.
