Just in time for Halloween, some very creepy (and unexplained) pictures of spooks.

1. The Brown Lady

The Brown Lady is one of the most famous ghost photographs there is; taken in 1936 in Raynham Hall in England, the shot appears to show a figure in a long gown or cloak. Some think the figure is Dorothy Townshend, a mistress of the hall in the 1700s who died tragically from spousal abuse.

2. Wem Town Hall "Fire Girl"

Wem Town Hall in England burned to the ground in 1995 — as the fire raged, a man named Tony O’Rahilly took pictures of the burning building. Though no one at the scene recalls seeing a young girl in or around the building, there seems to be one standing at the door in this photograph. Some say the girl is Jane Churn, a young girl who died in a fire in the same town in 1677.

3. "Grandpa's Ghost"

This picture, taken of the photographer's grandmother shortly after she moved into a nursing home in 1997, shows an older man standing behind her. However, the photographer reports that there was no man there while the picture was being taken — and that, years later, members of the family realized he looked a lot like the grandmother's husband, then deceased for three years.

4. Boothill Cemetery

This photo (exact date unknown, but believed to have been taken in the '90s/early aughts) features the photographer's friend dressed in 1880s period costume, using black and white for effect. However, after development, the friends realized that what appeared to be a young boy, also in period dress, had appeared in the shot.

5. Worstead Church

A picture taken in 1975 of Diane Berthelot sitting in the pews at Worstead Church in Norfolk, England, appears to show a creepy white figure sitting just behind here, though nobody else was present at the time the picture was taken by Diane's husband Peter.

6. Ghost of Lord Combermere

This picture was taken in the library of Combermere Abbey in 1891, and appears to show a man sitting in the armchair at left. Family members identified the figure as Lord Combermere, whose funeral was taking place miles away at the time the picture was taken.

This picture, originally intended only to capture the spiral staircase in the Queen's House section of the National Maritime Museum in England, was taken in 1966. A shrouded figure appears at the bottom of the stairs — possibly corroborating the many reports of strange encounters surrounding them over the years.

This picture was taken at the reportedly very haunted Bachelor's Grove in Illinois in 1991. That it was taken during a paranormal investigation conducted by the Ghost Research Society has caused some to doubt its legitimacy, but researchers insist no woman was present at the time the picture was taken.

9. The Ghostly Face of Freddy Jackson

This picture, taken in 1919 of a WWI squadron, appears to show a ghostly face behind the airman in the top row, fourth from left. Members of the squadron who later saw the photo said the face matched that of air mechanic Freddy Jackson, who had been killed in an airplane propellor accident two days before the photo was taken.

10. Specter of Newby Church

This picture — one of the more famous, and more controversial, pictures of potential ghosts — was taken in 1963 by Reverend K. F. Lord in Newby Church in North Yorkshire, England. Allegedly, some photo experts who have examined the photo say that the startling image is not the result of double exposure.

11. Queen Anne Bureau Hand

This picture was reportedly taken in the early 20th century and, after development, showed a spindly, disembodied hand resting on top of the photo's subject, a Queen Anne bureau.

This picture was taken in 2008 at the then-under-construction Decebal Hotel in Romania. There had long been reports of a ghostly woman in a long white dress on the premises.
